German term

Kanzleifolio

German to English Social Sciences History Old Manuscript (15th century)

Anyone know how we say Kanzleifolio in English? Danke im Voraus!

Kaportnoy (asker) Jan 8, 2018:
Before I asked this question, I had sent an e-mail to the client asking if there was any phrases I should leave in German. He just replied "Please leave untranslated all tricky terms. I am doing this piece together with a British colleagues who is going to check it anyway." So I think I will go ahead and leave this in German. Thanks everyone!
Kaportnoy (asker) Jan 8, 2018:
@philgoddard, @brigitteHilgner - oh yes, that's a good point. Thank you both!
philgoddard Jan 8, 2018:
One of Brigitte's references says it was a German format. If that is the case, I wouldn't translate it. You could perhaps explain that Kanzlei is chancellery.
Kaportnoy (asker) Jan 8, 2018:
@BrigitteHilgner, thank you. I know it was a paper size, just not sure how we would say it in English! :) @philgoddard, it's a manuscript - vienna register of homeowners in 1448.

What is it? A legal document? If so, who issued it, and what is it for?

Chancery paper

Duden gives:
Kanzleipapier:

weißes, holzfreies Papier in bestimmtem Format, wie es in einer Kanzlei verwendet wird

Paper historian Neil Harris suggests that Chancery, or a similarly sized sheet, accounted for 90% of the paper produced after 1500 in Europe. There are a number of reasons why this makes sense from the papermaker's standpoint: The full sheet folded in half gives an agreeable folio size book;

Note from asker:
Also great resources, thank you! Do you understand this as it was only used after 1500, or it became more widely used after 1500? As this manuscript is from 1448, I'd need to be careful. I may keep it in German with an English explanation in parentheses.

agree gangels (X) : Since it concerns [stock] size, "format" would be more accurate
