German term

auf einzelne Teile einer E-Mail bezogen

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks Medical imaging/DICOM
Slightly abbreviated context:

Spezielle Bestätigungs-Mail, mit der die Informationen optional verschlüsselt und auf einzelne Teile einer E-Mail bezogen versendet werden.

Does this mean that certain parts of the mail are encrypted, or what does it mean?

Discussion

Jan Liebelt Dec 12, 2008:
Well, that makes it "klar wie Klosbrühe"!! Any other allusions to the information or parts/elements of the e-mail *anywhere* else?
David Williams (asker) Dec 12, 2008:
Thanks there really isn't much context though, as this is a bulleted list of options. This "special" confirmation mail is an "X-TELEMEDICINE-NOTIFICATION-TO" (in accordance with the @GIT standard 1.5).
ottonicolai Dec 12, 2008:
I'm with Jan. Could you send a bit more context along with the sentence? The section you're asking about is really unclear.
David Williams (asker) Dec 11, 2008:
Or that confirmation is sent separately for individual parts of an email, e.g. for attachments, or something?

correlated to specific parts of an email

A special kind of confirmatory mail in which the information (optionally encrypted and correlated to specific parts of an email) can be sent.

The information (that is optionally encrypted and sent in the confirmatory mail) can be correlated to different parts of an email. Something like what we do when we reply to an email, say, para by para or sentence by sentence. Instead of drafting the reply as a continuous text, we key in our response after each sentence or para (of the received mail) that we choose to respond to.

@d_williams (in response to your note):
Well, since the German word used is "Informationen" (and not "Bestätigungsinformation"), one can't say for sure that the 'information' sent is the same as 'confirmation'. So, I would be adding meaning to the source text if I say that "it sends individual confirmations for specific parts of the mail, e.g. for the different MIME types".

[On a lighter note: any ambiguity in the source text must be necessarily left as such in the translated text ;-)]

"...adding meaning to the source text..." (above) = ...adding to the meaning of the source text...
Note from asker:
Thanks. So does that mean that it sends invidiual confirmations for specific parts of the mail, e.g. for the different MIME types?
Fair point, but I'm not allowed to apply the GIGO principle to my work.

Peer comment(s):

agree ottonicolai : This solution makes the source suddenly a bit clearer. I also feel that this confirmation mail does both optionally encrypting and referring to specific parts of the mail.

Thank you for confirming this, ottonicolai
agree Audrey Foster (X) : Safe solution IMO

All information related to specific parts of the e-mail is encrypted

According to the text, (all) the information may be encrypted. Whether or not it is sent out in separate chunks remains vague

(Or rather "relating")

to d_williams: I can't say what the "einzelne Teile" are precisely without more context. Sorry, it's too vague as it stands!

I'd says it refers to the information that may or may not be encrypted. Having said that, I have no idea what they mean!!! Can't you give me a few more sentences either side that could shed some light on the matter? I'm really clutching at straws here.
Note from asker:
OK. In that case, what are the " einzelne Teile"?
Sorry, I wasn't entirely clear. I meant, what does the "auf einzelne Teile einer E-Mail bezogen" refer to?
Thanks! Sorry, I left just after adding the previous note yesterday evening. Please see above for further clarification.
