French term

débâcle digestive

French to English Medical Medical (general) hospitalization report
Hi,

The patient is hospitalized for GI bleeds.
He has acute myeloblastic leukemia and myelodysplasia.
He suffered from an episode of lower back pain
"Un épisode douloureux lombaire bas (hématome profond? débâcle digestive?)"

What does "débâcle digestive" mean in this context?

Thanks

Joanna

Discussion

Denise Pavao Jun 8, 2018:
I was looking at your context again - it seems they're questioning whether the "débâcle digestive" is responsible for the lumbar pain. Could vomiting and diarrhea (as Dr Manu suggested) cause back pain? I think that's possible. Or is there some fecal compaction that is causing the pain? (Although débâcle in that case seems to suggest the blockage was already explulsed...) Maybe residual lumbar pain? Just some thoughts...
Drmanu49 Jun 7, 2018:
Tha<t is only part of the causes IMO.

Hi, Thank you all for your research. I think I found the meaning in this context of lower back pain: "gastroentérites et colites d'origine infectieuse" https://www.aideaucodage.fr/cim-a090. Any thoughts?

agree B D Finch : I prefer the euphemism "débâcle digestive", but your reference source seems impeccable.

Joanna, is there any indication that the patient had been constipated? I found this:
La fausse diarrhée
Selles liquides ou semi-liquides éliminées massivement après expulsion spontanée d’un bouchon, provoquant une véritable « débâcle intestinale ». https://lucperino.com/529/constipation.html
and this:
Note from asker:
Hi Denise, thanks for the research! Unfortunately we have no information about constipation. The only thing we know about his stools is that he has repeated episodes of melena.
