sentence
English
Art/Literary
as bold as I can, but wincing despite myself. I mount the stairs. How must I look to the world with my dingy shirt and trousers, my bare feet, my unkempt beard? Like a domestic, I pray, as ostler come home after a night's carousing.

my take
I tryi to show courage but I am still afraid. I go up the stairs. Other people must think I look odd in my dirty shirt and pants, my bare feet, my rough beard? I look like a house servant, even a stableman who is stumbling home after a night of hard drinking

Prison
From the word "Sentence", I am assuming one is talking here of coming back from a jail or prison or lockup. And the description of the dirty shirt, pants, rough beard etc. also points to that fact. Probably this is not a modern day prison that is spoken here. The person is trying to be brave, although he is trembling inside due to fear or feeling of insecurity. For he is wondering how the others would react to his appearance, for he looks like a servant or a stableman coming home after a night of heavy drinking and orgy.
The reference to "domestic" who could look like that also makes me believe that it is not from a modern period, same as the prisoner's condition.
