English to Malay Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
stepparent = ibu bapa tiri? but this sounds funny, as it should be either "ibu" or "bapa" tiri. Please help. thank you.

The term "stepparent" is probably used when the writer etc is not sure which parent is the "step" one. So the 'safety net' term is used. You are right, ONLY one parent can be a stepparent at one time except when the biological father dies and the stepmother remarries then probably bothe can be collectively used as per the term.
As to my answer, in Malay, if you use "ibu atau bapa tiri" it means the biological mum or the stepdad. If you want to say either the step mum or the step dad then it has clearly stated as per the answer.

sorry for some typos:
bothe should be \"both\"
has clearly stated should be \"has to be clearly stated\"
