to swamp sth

The context is about the first two albums of a Funkrock band: "...They produced their debut album. Then, threatening to swamp their first offering, album number two was an altogether punkier and funkier affair, with the infamously batty Tom X driving the desk."
Without knowing which of the two albums was more successful, would you say "to swamp" in this context means something positive (i.e. the 2nd album was better) or negative (i.e. the 2nd album threatened to damage the success of the 1st)?

In this case, I would say "to swamp" is used in the sense of "to outstrip".
Further alternatives would be: übertreffen, überflügeln

: in diesem Falle ja, ansonsten würde ich es eher mit überschwemmen/überhäufen übersetzen (wir wurden mit Anfragen überhäuft/überschwemmt.)
