The difference between Java "applets" and Java "applications" is that the first are to be embedded in Web page and are chiefly coded to be excuted on the Web. On the other hand, Java applications are designed to be excuted on single or several machines without the need ot have an Internet conncetion.
Both Java applets and applications need the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to run properly.
