sleep top to toe

Each of the alternatives presented here seems to be correct. Here's another option to consider.

Although some dictionaries say that "top-to-tail" for people, and "head-to-tail" for objects (The children sleep top-to-tail in the same bed, or in two beds placed head-to-tail), you can use these expressions interchangeably in both sense with regard to human beings. It's what two people do when they platonically share a bed, like friends, sisters etc. They sleep with their heads at opposite ends of the bed.

Here's an extract from Nathan Merritt's remembrances:
"Sometimes I'd sleep on their couch but mostly I'd just go top-to-toe with one the cousins. There was Reece, Travis who now plays with Penrith and their older brother too.
"I guess that's one of the benefits of having great family ... you can sleep pretty much anywhere."
Example sentence:

By 1942, my sisters had returned to the family home. We had a Morrison Shelter in the back room downstairs; we used to sleep top-to-toe.

... they would bathe in shifts with five kids in the bath and once and the littlies would sleep top-to-toe in bunk beds.
