English term

laser pick-up

English to French Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng CD player
Bonjour,

"The laser pick-up can now get to work. It’s made up of a laser diode, which produces a laser beam and a light sensor, which captures the laser’s reflection."

Discussion

Lara Barnett Apr 5, 2011:
OK. Maybe the "inaccurate" usage of pick-up then is what has thrown us who have misunderstood. THanks.
Tony M Apr 5, 2011:
@ Lara AFAIK, 'laser head' and 'laser pick-up' are synonyms in this context; if anything, 'pick-up' is being used inaccurately, since it ought really to refer just to the 'photo diode detector' part — but I assume it is being used here to describe the unit as a whole.
Tony M Apr 5, 2011:
@ Silvester I really don't think comparisons with old-fashioned microgroove records is particularly helpful here; the technology is totally different, and one might even say that the term has been 'recycled' for this new technology.

Pick-up simply refers to the head that makes the 'contact' (albeit optical rather than mechanical!) with the CD. This component is the equivalent, if you insist, of the 'cartidge' (aka pick-up) in an old-fashioned turntable.
Lara Barnett Apr 5, 2011:
I thought we used term "Laser head" in English. Therefore I would have thought there would have been a more specific term to convey "pick up".
Lara Barnett Apr 5, 2011:
Maybe. I was just trying to understand the Sylvester55 discussion entry.
Tony M Apr 5, 2011:
The English is perfect and totally consistent with the way CD technology works
Lara Barnett Apr 5, 2011:
Sorry sorry if that entry went out 7 times. (Computer error)
Lara Barnett Apr 5, 2011:
So maybe the English is not expressed very well? Which might account for so many disagrees to the varying suggestions this question has generated.
silvester55 Apr 5, 2011:
I don't think pick-up means "tête" The distance from the surface of the record to the traveling pickup head is kept constant by using a separate laser beam. This is very similar to every CD player that uses a "focus" laser to move the laser that reads digital bits to the proper spacing between the reader and the disc. Since phono records vary in thickness, this feature assures precision alignment from the pickup head to the

tête laser

It clearly refers to a single unit containing both the laser diode (laser light source) and the light sensor ('photocapteur', as in yesterday's question), so it clearly refers to the thing known as a 'tête laser', which usually travels on a straight guide rail running radially across the CD.

capteur laser

From various different web pages, I have found something that might could your term.

this (bi-lingual) document shows an example of this translation:
"< To keep the laser pickup clean, do not touch it, and do not forget
to close the disc tray when not using the CD player"
"< Pour garder le capteur laser propre, ne pas y toucher et ne pas
oublier de fermer le tiroir du disque"

disagree Jennifer Levey : Asker tells us this 'pick-up' includes a 'laser diode' (a laser light source), so it's clearly not a 'capteur'.

disagree Tony M : Agree with M/M: the reason this is referred to as a 'pick-up' and not a simple 'detector' is exactly that: this component fulfils both functions at the same time.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Refers to a small component in the CD player, and not the whole thing, and is related to the original meaning of 'pick-up': the 'capteur' 'picks up' the signal from the disc. / This is my field, and I do know exactly what it's talking about ;-)

you might be right , but after some research , it doesn't mean "tête" either , must be something like : levier , bras , je ne m'y connais pas trop .check the discussion entry .

http://www.priceminister.com/.../micromega-minimum-cd-lecteu...

" pick-up arm , Also called: tone arm the light balanced arm of a record player that carries the wires from the cartridge to the preamplifier "
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pick-up
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, and 'pick-up' is another word for the 'cartridge' on the end of the arm.
