Hello everyone,

I've been using WFA for around three years now, and during the recent virtual conference, I finally decided to take the plunge and invest in the paid version of a tool which I can only describe as brilliant. Hello everyone,

I've been using WFA for around three years now, and during the recent virtual conference, I finally decided to take the plunge and invest in the paid version of a tool which I can only describe as brilliant. Tonight was my first opportunity to 'test' WF Pro and Classic, and I'm getting really very frustrated. I've found certain features, but some I can't find at all, and I need them for my work.

In particular, I'm having huge trouble figuring out how to sync TMs and glossaries and use MT, particularly in Wordfast Classic, which can't seem to find my glossaries (or the MT servers!) at all. I'm also really missing the 'Provisional Segment' marker in WF Pro and the glossary panel and search functions in both tools. What's more, I happened to have a MemoQ demo on my computer from months ago, and was disappointed to find that I immediately found what I was looking for in that software (despite having discounted it when I first tried it...).

I refuse to believe that it's the tools, although I'm prepared to have the bad news broken to me. What on earth am I missing?! I'd really like to be able to sync up my TMs and glossaries from WFA with WF Classic and Pro since I have a large project coming up which would be perfect to test run my new software. Surely WF Studio has greater functionality than WFA, not less?

I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give me, since I've spent a few hours searching around for what I want now with no luck at all.

Thank you in advance!

Marie

Other problems with both programs apparently include... Oct 16, 2013

... various buttons (including "Apply" and "OK") simply not working, as well as frequent crashes whenever I try to set up a project (TMs, glossaries, change settings etc.). I never had these problems before but now these tools seem totally unworkable for me.

I realise that WF supposedly 'doesn't do refunds', but surely exceptions apply when the software simply isn't usable? I'd really appreciate someone from WF getting back to me about this, because it's beyond frustrating.

You have the nicest tools in the world Oct 17, 2013

which never crash. It seems to me that you need some basic training. For WF Classic you can do this on your own, it needs two or three hours, just have a look at the user's guide. WF Pro doesn't work in the same way, it takes some time to adapt. If you are not able to use both tools, then stay away from Studio, it is a giant step in complexity (it took me 6 months).

Let's wait what the peope fro WF will be saying.

It's definitely crashing... Oct 17, 2013

Hi nrichy,

Thanks for your reply. I'm not computer illiterate by any means, and I've read through the manuals carefully. My problem is that the software is simply not working. At first I thought it was teething problems with settings, getting used to something new, etc., but none of the settings I change actually save. They reset themselves whenever I click "Apply", "OK", etc. On top of that, the software is freezing and crashing repeatedly, so clearly something about my set-up is

On top of that, the software is freezing and crashing repeatedly, so clearly something about my set-up is different to yours. As for Pro being more complicated, I've had much more success with it, and gave up with Classic entirely because it won't allow me to do or change anything to start a project now without failing.

Thank you for your comments about sharing glossaries between Pro and Classic, but my main concern is WFA. I can supposedly use my WFA glossaries with Classic, but that setting now also resets every time I try to use it, so it's a no-go for now... The software just doesn't want to play at all!

I look forward to seeing what a WF bod has to say!

Some answers... Oct 21, 2013

Dear Marie,

I hope you have already found some answers to your questions... but just in case, here are a few that might help!

The provisional segment marker is called "Confirm/Unconfirm segment" and is the orange asterisk icon in WF Pro. When you click on the icon, it makes the segment unconfirmed and it won't go into the TM. To confirm it, you have to be on the unconfirmed segment and press the icon (or use the shortcut key). You can use the outline view to filter for unconfirmed segments. I do this before starting my revision.

For MT, there are some links in the Google and Microsoft MT preference sections that lead you to instructions on how to set them up.

I'd really like to be able to sync up my TMs and glossaries from WFA with WF Classic and Pro since I have a large project coming up which would be perfect to test run my new software. Surely WF Studio has greater functionality than WFA, not less?

Setting up a connection to your WFA TM is fairly easy with WF Pro. You just need to copy a link and workgroup ID from WFA and paste them in the right fields in WF Pro (see TM settings in both). I just tested WFP with a remote connection to a WFA TM and glossary. I haven't tested WFC lately but this should work as well.

Hope this helps!

John

Hello John,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to this topic! I'm sorry for taking so long to respond (hectic week). The confirm/unconfirm was exactly what I was looking for re. the provisional segment marker. I use it in the same way as you.

As for the glossaries, when I wrote my first post I'd actually already managed to sync WFA and WF Pro, but not WFA and WF Classic. Unfortunately, every time I go through the motions to get this set up, the settings seem to reset to default, which is very frustrating. I'd hoped I'd perhaps be able to sync Classic and Pro instead, but that was also not possible. My WF Classic seems very buggy in general and is so temperamental that I've given up on it in favour of Pro, which seems to work in a very similar way to WFA and is fairly user-friendly. If I could only display my glossary panel while working it would be near-perfect!

By comparison, Classic seems virtually unusable since it just keeps crashing over and over and over.

If you have any tips for fixing that problem, I'd be all ears!

Thank you once again and have a great weekend
Marie

Common causes of crashes in Word with Classic Oct 26, 2013

I assume you mean Word is crashing when using Classic. Classic itself doesn't crash: either you can use it (expand its toolbar, start a translation session, perform a concordance search etc.), or you can't.

Anyway, the most common causes of Word crashing when using (or attempting to use) Wordfast Classic are an old, buggy Bluetooth driver and/or the "Click-to-Run" version of Microsoft Office (if you are using Office 2010 or 2013). Check whether these problems apply to your situation.
