My mother tongue is Mandarin/Chinese. The main obstacle of my career, at the aspect of language, is English. I am working quite hard now so my skills are improved but not enough.
Therefore, I decide to invest on myself more and stay in an English environment. It is more popular to study T or I in UK for Taiwanese people. But I wonder if Australia is a better choice, considering that its geography, NAATI, cost of living, tuition and etc.
I send my applications to Macquire and University of Western Sydney. It's a long shot but maybe I can meet any person know these two schools here. I am grateful for any suggestions or discussions.
I am a rookie here. Hope I don't break any code of conduct here. ▲ Collapse | | | Jeremy_Chen Avstraliya Local time: 07:29 English to Chinese + ... TOPIC STARTER

Dear Kimichen,
Welcome to ProZ.com and congratulations on being accepted at the Macquaire University.
There is nothing wrong with your posting and you are not breaking any rules either. Hopefully someone who studies or has studied in Australia will notice this posting and will help you.
Good luck and welcome again.
Monika

would be to check what you're asking for and eliminate themselves as per your criteria of qualified answerers (as in "I don't live/didn't study T&I in Australia").
On the off-chance, you might want to drop a line to our Ancient Greek/Ancient languages moderator, Adam, who's a teacher in the Australian educational system. | |

Hi kimichen.

I got a Master's in Applied Linguistics by distance learning from Macquarie, in Sydney, Australia. Here's my feedback:
Price: Compared to US schools I attended, I found Macquarie to be very cheap. It cost me a total of 7,500 USD. And all learning material was included in the price (notes written by the professors as well as books, which can be quite expensive).
Quality: The teachers are very experienced and I learned a lot from them. Of course there are exceptions, and I can only speak about my teachers. They were always available for help, and they tried to make sure I understood the material well. As for the material, I was impressed with all the research articles that the professors had gathered and sent to students along with the books.
For my degree there were no final exams; the grade was based on 2-4 big assignments that we had to do for each course.
Organization/paperwork: I've always had problems in this aspect, but that may be because I studied via distance mode. For example, there was lack of communication with the distance-learning office and the registrar's office; I had dropped a class and they repeatedly asked me to pay for it; I registered for another class 3 times and they still hadn't entered this in their records (and it was the class for my dissertation too); correspondence always arrived too late and I always had to wait for weeks for the books and learning material; and the last incident: my diploma was lost in the mail (not sure if it was sent in the first place; I have reason to doubt after all the bureaucracy problems I've had with them).
I hope this information helps you.
Maria
