Opening .rar files Təhdid postu: Armorel Young

I have been sent some files in .rar format. I haven't encountered this file extension before but Google tells me I need WinRAR to open them. Is this going to be simple to use and operate? I see that there is a free trial version of WinRAR, but how do I know whether I need the 32-bit or the 64-bit version?

You just install winRAR (to be purchased at www.rarlab.com), then save the file in a desired location of your hdd, right clik the file and say "Expand here". That's all.

it will tell you if you have 32 or 64 bit Windows.
However, the 32 bit version of RAR will work also on a 64 bit computer, AFAIR.

My favourite program is Filzip (http://www.filzip.com), it is free, stable and supports .ace, .arc. arj, .cab, .gz, .lha, .jar, .rar, .tar and of course .zip, so you only need one program for all your needs.

I've downloaded the trial version of WinRAR and it has opened the files perfectly, so for the time being the problem is solved!

WinRAR will continue to work even after the 30 day trial-period expires, all that happens is a nag-screen that appears when you open the program...

I see that your problem is solved, but just as a suggestion, try PeaZip from http://peazip.sourceforge.net/
It opens a lot more compressed files than just WinRAR ones, and it won't bother you with a nagging screen after a 30-day trial; its free.

If your file to extract is a double-byte file name [e.g. Japanese, Chinese, Korean file names], you need the respective RAR program to unzip or you get a file handling failure message. Just rename to a single-byte file name before unzipping and it is OK.
