A few days ago I found myself unable to get online, even though I have DSL service. After spending the morning on the phone with tech service, trying every trick in the book, the agent's supervisor finally identified the problem and I was back online...until I tried restarting the computer and found myself disconnected again. The tech representative taught me how to manually solve the problem (by going to start>run and tweaking with the info), but the only way not to get disconnected is leaving ... After spending the morning on the phone with tech service, trying every trick in the book, the agent's supervisor finally identified the problem and I was back online...until I tried restarting the computer and found myself disconnected again. The tech representative taught me how to manually solve the problem (by going to start>run and tweaking with the info), but the only way not to get disconnected is leaving the computer on standby overnight. Whenever I turn it off or restart it, I need to repeat the manual intervention in order to restore my connectivity. Needless to say, this shouldn't be happening, and the representative was at a loss as to what may be causing it. His best bet was a faulty network card that should be replaced. The message we get when unable to connect is "RPC Server Unavailable".
Does this ring a bell with any of you? I will sincerely appreciate any and all advice

Dear Susana,
Start with checking you browser setup. Assuming your computer runs under Windows XP open Internet Explorer, click Tools and choose the Connections tab. Is your ISP in the list and selected as default? If so, check that the circle next to "Always dial my default connection". Click "Apply" and "OK".
Some ISP have special software to manage the connections, and this installs an initiation in Windows Start-up folder. If your does too click Start on the taskbar ... See more Dear Susana,

If you at all can establish connection it's unlikely the network card is the culprit. To me it smells to a command issue.

And now my DVD drive is getting picky, and now and then refusing to acknowledge there is a disk in the drive...even though it was playing that very disk before I had to stop it for a break. Exactly how is a broad supposed to find out how the second season of "24" comes to an end???

The key is what's in "by going to start>run and tweaking with the info" ... what info, exactly?
The DVD is probably a separate issue. However, Windows -- hmm, I just said this in another thread a few minutes ago -- is a steadily degrading operating system. After three years, I would bet dollars to donuts that you would see new life breathed into your machine.

When I go to the command window and type "ipconfig", the IP Adress field displays all zeros, which means I do not have connectivity. If I then type "net start dhcp", this provides me with an IP Adress and automatically I am online again. If I go on standby I do not need to perform this sequence, however if I turn off or restart my PC, I need to perform this sequence in order to obtain connectivity. Does this make any sense to you (or anyone)?

I don't have any specific solutions, but if the key is finding out why DHCP is not restarting on it own. You could Google around for strings like "Windows DHCP doesn't start" or "Windows DHCP stops", that kind of thing.
