Description The Association of Estonian Translation Companies was created for the purpose of organising todays translation market, as well as for uniting serious and responsible providers of translation services in pursuit of the goals of the organisation.
On August 24th, 2000, representatives from translation companies such as Luisa, Galandrex, Dussan, A&A Lingua, Prolegomena, Aabel, Klanberg, and Interlex met on the latters initiative to conduct a joint discussion on the possibility of creating such an association. The joint declaration, signed on the same day, stated that the time for creating the Association of Estonian Translation Companies had come. The declaration set out that any company offering translation services that makes a commitment to the statutes and the code of ethics of the association and conforms to the requirements established for members may become a member of the association. The main goals of the association:

  • to contribute to the foundation of a well-functioning competitive environment, characterised by openness and honesty, in Estonias translation services market;
  • to contribute to the establishment of translation standards and quality norms, to actively participate in the development of relevant legislation, and to act as an intermediary in the solving of misunderstandings that may occur between a translation company and customer;
  • to contribute to the incorporation of the European Unions principles regulating translation activity to the legal space of Estonia, as well as to cooperate with other domestic and foreign translation associations and organisations;
  • to participate with the joint efforts of all members in carrying out of large-scale translation projects for instance, major EU projects. (See also News/Articles).

    So far, the Association of Estonian Translation Companies has begun to work toward the previously mentioned goals. The members have approved the code of ethics and the unified standard of quality. Standardised conditions of rendering translation services and the corresponding set of notions have been developed. Even though there is still much work to be done, the process of raising the standards for translation services in Estonia to those offered by our Western European colleagues has begun.
