I have been translating for most of my adult life.
I worked as a full-time translator for a "bio-medical" firm in St. Petersburg, Russia, for a little over a year in the early 1990s. While in Russia, I translated technical manuals, business letters, and contracts from Russian to English (and, in some cases, from English to Russian).
During my graduate studies in Slavic, I regularly glossed and translated works related to my dissertation and other research. These were from Russian, Yiddish, German, French, Old Russian, Old Church Slavic, and Czech to English.
While pursuing my degree, I was a voluntary translator for the Simon Weisenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance and members of the greater LA Jewish community. Mainly the documents involved were letters, postcards, notes on the backs of photos, life-event certificates and forms (birth, wedding/ketubot, death, passport, transit documents, etc.), brief family histories, etc. requiring translation from Polish and Yiddish to English.
I free-lanced in 2006-2008 with ProZ and mainly translated articles about furniture.
As a faculty member, I taught courses in reading Russian for graduate students from fields outside of Slavic. This involved heavy translating and teaching the art of glossing and translating for meaning. Most of the material I translated was in history, anthropology, visual arts, and information science. I also designed and graded a departmental reading exam in Russian, and I reviewed and validated translations for other academic departments and programs.
And I continue to free-lance through ProZ and my university connections.
