Source text - Japanese 皆さんは、普段慣れ親しんでいるカスタードについて詳しく知っていますか? 「カスタード」という言葉を聞いたとき、我々が想像するのはシュークリームに詰める濃度のしっかりついたカスタードクリームですが、本場イギリスでは「ジャンル」をさす言葉であり、卵と牛乳を混ぜて加熱して作るもの全般に使われます。 イギリスでは一般に「カスタード」と言うと、真っ先にイギリス人が思い浮かべるのは、もっと濃度が少なく、ソース状のカスタードです。クレームアングレーズ(アングレーズソース)と言います。そしてそれは、インスタントのカスタードパウダーで作ったものです。これが大多数のイギリス人にとっての「カスタード」です。 インスタントのカスタードパウダーは1837年に開発されました。もともと卵は入っておらず、メインの原材料はコーンスターチや香料、アナトー色素のみでした。後に砂糖が加わり、卵や牛乳の使い方にも改良が加えられて、現在の我々が知っているようなカスタードクリームになりました。
Translation - English I have a question for you. How much do you really know about that common staple, “custard”? When you hear “custard” you probably imagine the thick and sticky custard cream filling in a choux pastry, but in the custard homeland of the UK, it actually refers to a “genre” of food. More specifically a custard is anything that is produced by mixing eggs with milk and heating the resulting mixture. When you say “custard” to someone from the UK, the image that will come to them isn’t something so thick, “custard” to them is something more akin to a sauce. Something called Crème Anglaise. Also, it is something made from an instant powder. This is what “custard” is to the majority of people from the UK. Instant custard powder was first developed in 1837. No eggs were in this original custard powder, the main ingredients were corn starch, flavorings, and annatto coloring. Later sugar was added, and the recipe was further improved with the use of eggs and milk until it took on a shape similar to the custard cream we know today.
