Source text - German Über Wilhelm Tell ist alles bekannt – könnte man denken. Tatsächlich werden wohl keine neuen Quellen auftauchen, mit denen sich die Existenz des eidgenössischen Nationalhelden einwandfrei beweisen oder widerlegen ließe. Die schweizerische Geschichtsforschung interessiert sich denn auch längst nicht mehr für die Frage der Historizität, sondern vielmehr dafür, wann und wie solche Geschichten aufgekommen sind und warum sie immer wieder neu erzählt werden – bis heute. Und diesbezüglich lässt sich nicht bestreiten: Tell ist „alive and well“. Davon zeugen Theateraufführungen, Filme, Comics, Videospiele, Werbeprodukte und politische Ansprachen ebenso wie das vorliegende Buch.

Auf plausible und verständliche Art erläutern Groebner und Blatter, warum diese Geschichte in ein Kanzleibuch aufgenommen wurde, das sonst vor allem Abschriften von Urkunden enthält. In den juristisch ausgetragenen Auseinandersetzungen mit Habsburg um 1470 scheint der Kanzlist Hans Schriber bemerkt zu haben, dass Obwalden seine Freiheitsansprüche kaum ausreichend dokumentieren konnte; aus diesem Grund fügte er seiner Urkundensammlung eine Geschichte bei, welche den Aufstand gegen die habsburgische Herrschaft legitimieren sollte.
Translation - English One might think we know everything there is to know about William Tell. It is certainly most unlikely that any new sources will appear, proving or disproving beyond doubt the existence of the Swiss national hero. It makes sense, then, that Swiss historical research has long since shifted its focus away from the question of historicity and instead onto when and how this type of narrative appeared, and why they continue to be retold right up to the present day. Groebner and Blatter make a plausible and comprehensible case for why this story should have been included in a legal volume mostly given over to copies of official documents. The lawyer Hans Schriber seems to have noted that Obwalden was unable to provide sufficient documentary support for his demands for independence during the legal battle with the Habsburgs around 1470. Hence, he appended a to his collection of documents a story which, he hoped, would legitimise Swiss resistance to Habsburg domination.

Source text - German Im ökologischen Weinbau sind wir in Deutschland einer der absoluten Vorreiter gewesen. Der Entschluss, ausschließlich ökologisch zu arbeiten, fiel bereits 1974. Ein möglicher wirtschaftlicher Wert ökologischen Weinbaus war damals noch kein Thema. Nach nun über 40 Jahren, die wir unser Weingut nachhaltig bewirtschaften, geben uns die herausragende Qualität der Weine und der Erfolg recht für die Entscheidung damals. Das ökologische Denken und Handeln ist fest verankert in allem, was wir tun, und ist für uns selbstverständlich. Das gesamte Weingut wurde nach ökologischen Standards errichtet, das Baumaterial stammt aus der Region. Um den CO2-Ausstoß noch weiter zu mindern, nehmen wir sogar unsere Flaschen zurück und lassen sie reinigen. Der sogenannte ökologische Footprintbeträgt bei uns nur etwa ein Drittel eines konventionell wirtschaftenden Weinguts unserer Größe.
Allem voran steht immer unser Streben nach der höchsten Qualität und authentischen Weinen. Hierfür wird der Ertrag der Reben konsequent beschränkt. Wir wollen das Terroir im Glas. Unsere Reben wurzeln tief – müssen tief wurzeln, weil sie ‚von oben‘ nichts von uns bekommen – keine Bewässerung, keine Mineral- bzw. Kunstdünger. Tiefe Wurzeln haben natürlich größeres Potential die Mineralik, das Terroir, aus dem Boden aufzunehmen. Das Ergebnis sind eigenständige, authentische Weine, die überzeugen.
Translation - English Weingut Roth has always been at the forefront of organic winemaking in Germany. We took the decision to go exclusively organic back in 1974, when the economic value of organic production had not even begun to be understood. Now, after 40 years of sustainable cultivation, the outstanding quality of our wines speak for the wisdom of our original decision. Everything we do is grounded in our philosophy of organic production, and we wouldn’t do it any other way. The whole estate is built to organic standards using materials from this region. We even take back and sterilise our old bottles to reduce our CO2 emissions. We have achieved an environmental footprint of approximately 1/3 of a similarly-sized estate which uses conventional methods.
What matters most to us is achieving the highest possible quality in authentically Franconian wines. Yields are kept carefully under control in order to recapture our unique terroir in your glass. Our vines put down deep roots, but then they have to, as they do not get anything from us up here: no artificial irrigation, and no chemical or artificial fertilisers. Deep roots allow the vines to take up the minerality and distinctive quality of the terroir from the ground. The result is unique, authentic wines which speak for themselves.
