LOS HAITISES (‘highlands’ in the Taíno language) is a protected national park where the extraordinary rock formations and untamed natural beauty will carry you back to the 16th century for a glimpse of Taino Indian life sheltered in these caves. We tour the three main caves: St. Gabriel, la Liña, and Arena, where you will see original rock drawings (pictographs) and engravings (petroglyphs) left by the native people.
Navigate among the islets observing the abundant local birdlife: pelicans, frigatbirds, egrets, ibis, vultures, etc…. Drift through the tangled silence of the mangrove. An unforgettable journey back to our roots and a unique opportunity for amateurs of nature and photography.
LOS HAITISES + CAYO LEVANTADO
After the tour we traverse the bay for lunch on the famous little island called Cayo Levantado (Bacardi), just across from Samaná. Here you will enjoy a typical Dominican buffet (fish, conch, chicken…) as you look out onto the white sand beaches, and enjoy free time for swimming and snorkeling in the transparent, turquoise waters.
LOS HAITISES + CANO HONDO
After admiring the park and caves, we’ll wind through the mangrove for 15 minutes and emerge on the other side to discover the splendid eco-lodge El Paraiso Caño Hondo. Hidden among the luxuriant vegetation, this spot is a charm of nature that invites you to relax in the cascading fresh water pools and falls surrounding the restaurant. Go for a swim in the pure spring waters and enjoy a delicious Dominican style lunch in a unique setting. Zip-line for children and adults available for an additional fee.
WATERFALL
Situated near the little town of Limon, around 15 km from Las Terrenas, the waterfall plunges for over 50 meters along a moss-covered rock face. Let yourself be overwhelmed by its majesty, and play in the cool waters and spray in the pool at the bottom.
A 30-minute ride on horseback through lush greenery, scattered with coffee and cacao trees, will take you to this amazing waterfall. You can also choose to trek it with a good pair of walking shoes. Return to a local ranch for a generous Dominican buffet.
