Source text - English Central to monastic life is the commitment to celibacy, a choice which would appear to set monks and nuns apart from ‘normal’ men and women. Some scholars argue that this viewpoint was represented in the Middle Ages, with sexual reproduction so common an expectation that those who chose celibacy became not men and women but a third gender; however, recent ethnographic research into contemporary monasticism has shown that twenty-first-century monks and nuns have a well-developed sense of their own self as masculine or feminine and that gender-specific behaviour is indeed in evidence. This paper focuses on the expression of gender identity through musical and textual expression.
The Opus Dei of the sung liturgy and daily Office is crucial to monastic life, and many monks and nuns find creative expression through musical setting of texts, so this paper explores the difference dilemma of music as both product and promulgator of gender constructs. Celibacy in the monastic sense, defined as a lifelong commitment to abstain from all sexual activity, necessarily precludes marriage and reproduction and thus denies a conventionally-expressed generative identity, or a psychic construction of oneself as a potential progenitor; yet the textual response which drives compositional endeavour features creative and procreative metaphors through which the Religious repeatedly express their generative identity. Other issues examined in this paper include the impact of gender on textual response, textual themes and imagery, and reception and evaluation of the musico-textual product.
This research demonstrates that, in celibate monasticism, musical creativity provides a medium for the sublimation of sexual and reproductive energy as creative energy, and that musical choices clearly demonstrate the construction and interpretation not of a ‘third gender’ but of positive male/female gender identities.
Translation - French Faire vœu de chasteté se situe au cœur de la vie monastique, et on pourrait dire qu’un tel choix tient à l’écart les religieux des hommes et des femmes ‘normaux’. Ce point de vue était courant au Moyen Age où l’on vivait dans l’attente de se reproduire, et où l’on pensait que ceux qui avaient choisi la chasteté étaient devenus un troisième sexe. Cependant, des recherches ethnographiques du monachisme contemporain ont montré que les religieux du 21e siècle expriment leur masculinité ou leur féminité par leur comportement musical ; cet article, porte principalement sur l’expression de l’identité sexuelle par l’expression musicale et textuelle.
La liturgie et les heures canoniales chantées – dites ensemble ‘l’Opus Dei’ – se trouvent au cœur de la quotidienne monastique, et il y a beaucoup de religieux qui s’expriment de manière créative en mettant des textes en musique, donc cet exposé explore le « dilemme de la différence » par lequel la musique fonctionne à la fois comme produit et comme diffuseur des concepts de sexe. La chasteté au sens monastique, définie comme l’engagement à s’abstenir de toutes activités sexuelles tout au long de la vie, en excluant le mariage et la reproduction, prive d’une identité générative, c'est-à-dire de l’image de soi comme géniteur potentiel ; pourtant, les réponses textuelles des religieux font figurer des métaphores de créativité et de procréation par lesquelles leur identité générative s’exprime. Les questions de l’impact du sexe sur la réponse textuelle et sur la réception du produit musico-textuel sont ainsi examinées.
Ces recherches démontrent que, dans le monachisme célibat, l’énergie sexuelle et reproductrice peut être sublimée comme de l’énergie créative au moyen de la musique, et que les choix musicaux démontrent la construction et l’interprétation non pas d’un « troisième sexe » mais des identités masculines/féminines positives.

Source text - French Les caractéristiques (taille et composition chimique élémentaire) des aérosols transportés dans le circuit primaire au cours des essais XXXX sont variables d’un essai à l’autre. La composition élémentaire des aérosols, peu dépendante de la taille des aérosols, varie par contre au cours de chaque essai. Les caractéristiques principales des aérosols sont résumées ci-dessous, Pour de plus amples détails il est conseillé de se rapporter aux rapports finaux expérimentaux des essais XXXX

Les tailles des aérosols transitant en branche chaude et froide du circuit primaire ont été évaluées à partir des mesures réalisées sur les plateaux d’impacteurs. Elles ne sont donc que ponctuelles et représentatives d’une période donnée au cours du test. Pour chacun des essais, en branche froide l’analyse des impacteurs indique une population d’aérosols quasi log-normale. Les AMMD (diamètres aérodynamiques médians en masse) sont compris entre 1.4 et 3 μm (écart type géométrique : 2). En branche chaude, l’hypothèse d’une distribution log-normale de la population d’aérosols, moins évidente, conduit à une taille d’aérosols (AMMD) de l’ordre de 1.5 à 2 μm, c’est-à-dire sensiblement plus petite. Les tailles respectives des aérosols mesurées respectivement en branche chaude et froide sont cohérentes pour chacun des essais XXXX avec une agglomération des particules lorsqu’elles transitent dans une zone plus froide. Par ailleurs, la taille des aérosols est dépendante à la fois de leur temps de transit dans le circuit primaire et des concentrations en produits de fission. Ainsi, pour les essais XXXX réalisés avec un débit de vapeur d’eau variable ; la taille des aérosols, clairement dépendante du débit, diminue lorsque le temps de transit des particules dans le circuit primaire diminue.
Néanmoins, certains travaux montrent que compte tenu de ces tailles de particules la rétention des aérosols dans le circuit primaire (notamment dans les coudes) aurait dû être plus importante. Les dépôts d’aérosols dans le circuit primaire laissent à penser que les tailles des particules élémentaires sont en réalité plus faibles. L’analyse par MEB de quelques plateaux d’impacteurs confirme d’ailleurs l’existence d’agglomérats de particules élémentaires dont la taille est comprise entre 0.1 et 0.5 μm en branche chaude. Par ailleurs, les vapeurs d’éléments très volatils (comme l’iode par exemple) se condensent sur les aérosols réfractaires déjà formés lors de leur transit dans la branche froide. Cela implique pour ces éléments une distribution en taille légèrement plus petite puisque leur condensation sera proportionnellement plus importante sur les aérosols de plus petite taille dans la distribution.

The size of aerosols circulating in the hot and cold legs of the primary circuit were calculated using the measurements carried out on the impactor surfaces. They are therefore only isolated examples representative of a given period during the course of the test. For each of the three tests, analysis of the impactors in the cold leg shows an almost log-normal aerosol population. The AMMD (mass median aerodynamic diameters) were between 1.4 (XXXX) et 3 μm (XXXX) (deviation geometric standard type: 2). In the hot leg, the less obvious hypothesis of a log-normal aerosol population distribution led to an aerosol size (MMAD) of the order of 1.5 to μm, that is, appreciably smaller. The respective aerosol sizes measured respectively in the hot and cold legs are consistent for each of the tests (XXXX) with an agglomeration of particles when they go through a colder area. Otherwise, aerosol size is dependent on the time they spend in the primary circuit as well as on the concentration of fission products. So it was for the XXXX tests carried out with a variable steam flow (XXXX); aerosol size, clearly flow dependent, is smaller when the particles spend less time in the primary circuit.
Nevertheless, some studies show that in view of these particle sizes the retention of particles in the primary circuit (notably in the bends) is likely to be more significant. The aerosol deposits in the primary circuit suggest that the sizes of particles are actually small. The analysis by scanning electron microscope of some impactor surfaces also confirms the existence of particle agglomerates measuring between 0.1 and 0.5 μm in the hot leg. Otherwise, the gases of highly volatile elements (such as iodine, for example) condense on the refractory aerosols already formed during transit through the hot leg. This implies a slightly smaller size range for these elements because their condensation will be proportionately greater for the smaller aerosols in the distribution.

The XXX is a charitable organization which aims to educate musicians and promote sacred music. This piano recital therefore features compositions by masters such as J.S. Bach and F. Busoni, and their pieces, including ‘Choral Preludes’, will be performed at XXX by an up-and-coming, exceptionally talented young pianist, XXX. XXX began playing the piano at the age of 10; and having proved to be an extremely gifted child he was able to enter the Conservatory of XXX at the age of 12. Today at the age of 22, he studies at the XXX Conservatory in XXX.
This spring recital is a first time event, which XXX hopes will be the first of many. We are sure you will enjoy the evening , not only because of the captivating music and the ambience but because it will be followed by the serving of delicious food and drinks to make the evening a memorable one .
