Source text - English Somalia (pronounced /soʊˈmɑːliə/ soh-MAH-lee-ə; Somali: Soomaaliya; Arabic: الصومال aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Republic of Somalia (Somali: Jamhuuriyadda Soomaaliya, Arabic: جمهورية الصومال Jumhūriyyat aṣ-Ṣūmāl) and formerly known as the Somali Democratic Republic under communist rule, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Kenya to the southwest, the Gulf of Aden with Yemen to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Ethiopia to the west.
In antiquity, Somalia was an important center for commerce with the rest of the ancient world. Its sailors and merchants were the main suppliers of frankincense, myrrh and spices, items which were considered valuable luxuries by the Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Mycenaeans and Babylonians with whom the Somali people traded. According to most scholars, Somalia is also where the ancient Kingdom of Punt was situated. The ancient Puntites were a nation of people that had close relations with Pharaonic Egypt during the times of Pharaoh Sahure and Queen Hatshepsut. The pyramidal structures, temples and ancient houses of dressed stone littered around Somalia are said to date from this period. In the Middle Ages, several powerful Somali empires dominated the regional trade including the Ajuuraan State, which excelled in hydraulic engineering and fortress building, the Sultanate of Adal, whose general Ahmed Gurey was the first commander in history to use cannon warfare on the continent during Adal's conquest of the Ethiopian Empire, and the Gobroon Dynasty, whose military dominance forced governors of the Omani empire north of the city of Lamu to pay tribute to the Somali Sultan Ahmed Yusuf.
Somalia was never formally colonized. Muhammad Abdullah Hassan's Dervish State successfully repulsed the British Empire four times and forced it to retreat to the coastal region. As a result of its fame in the Middle East and Europe, the Dervish State was recognized as an ally by the Ottoman Empire and the German Empire, and remained throughout World War I the only independent Muslim power on the continent. After a quarter of a century holding the British at bay, the Dervishes were finally defeated in 1920 when Britain for the first time in Africa used aeroplanes when it bombed the Dervish capital of Taleex. As a result of this bombardment, former Dervish territories were turned into a protectorate of Britain. Italy similarly faced the same opposition from Somali Sultans and armies and did not acquire full control of parts of modern Somalia until the Fascist era in late 1927. This occupation lasted till 1941 and was replaced by a British military administration. Northern Somalia would remain a protectorate while southern Somalia became a trusteeship. The Union of the two regions in 1960 formed the Somali Republic.
Due to its longstanding ties with the Arab world, Somalia was accepted in 1974 as a member of the Arab League. To strengthen its relationship with the rest of the African continent, Somalia joined other African nations when it founded the African Union, and began to support the ANC in South Africa against the apartheid regime and the Eritrean secessionists in Ethiopia during the Eritrean War of Independence. A Muslim country, Somalia is one of the founding members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and is also a member of the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. Despite suffering from civil strife and instability, Somalia has also managed to sustain a free market economy which, according to the World Bank, the Ludwig von Mises Institute, the Independent Institute and the Foundation for Economic Education, outperforms those of many other countries in Africa.

وقديما، كانت الصومال أحد أهم مراكز التجارة العالمية بين دول العالم القديم. حيث كان البحارة والتجار الصوماليين الموردين الأساسيين لكل من اللبان (المستكة) ونبات المر والتوابل والتي كانت تعتبر من أقيم المنتجات بالنسبة للمصريين القدماء والفينقيين والمايسونيين والبابليين، الذين ارتبطت بهم جميعا القوافل التجارية الصومالية وأقام الصوماليون معهم العلاقات التجارية. وبالنسبة للعديد من المؤرخين ومدرسي التاريخ، تقع الصومال في نفس موقع مملكة البنط القديمة والتي كانت تربطها علاقات وثيقة مع مصر الفرعونية خاصة في عهدي الفرعون "ساحو رع" من ملوك الأسرة الخامسة عصر الدولة القديمة، والملكة "حتشبسوت" من ملوك الأسرة الثامنة عشر عصر الدولة الحديثة. ويدل على ذلك التكوينات الهرمية والمعابد والمباني التي تم بنائها بالجرانيت والرخام والتي يرجع زمانها إلى نفس الفترة التي يرجع إليها مثيلتها من المباني في مصر القديمة. وفي العصر القديم، تنافست العديد من الدويلات التي نشأت في بعض مناطق الصومال مثل شبه جزيرة حافون ورأس قصير ومنطقة مالاو مع جيرانهم من مملكة سبأ والأرشكيين والأكسميين على التجارة مع ممالك الهند والإغريق والرومان القديمة.
ومع ميلاد الإسلام على الجهة المقابلة لسواحل الصومال المطلة على البحر الأحمر تحول تلقائيا التجار والبحارة والمغتربين الصوماليين القاطنين في شبه الجزيرة العربية إلى الإسلام وذلك من خلال تعاملهم مع أقرانهم من التجار العرب المسلمين. ومع فرار العديد من الأسر المسلمة من شتى بقاع العالم الإسلامي خلال القرون الأولى من انتشار الإسلام بالإضافة إلى دخول أغلبية الشعب الصومالي إلى الإسلام سلميا عن طريق المعلمين الصوماليين المسلمين الذين عملوا على نشر تعاليم الإسلام في القرون التالية، تحولت الدويلات القائمة على أرض الصومال إلى دويلات ومدن إسلامية مثل مدن مقديشيو وبربرة وزيلع وباراوا ومركا والذين كونوا سويا جزءا من الحضارة البربرية. وقد عُرفت مقديشيو بعد انتشار الإسلام في الصومال باسم "مدينة الإسلام" كما تحكمت في تجارة الذهب في منطقة شرق إفريقيا لقرون طويلة. وفي العصور الوسطى، سيطرت على طرق التجارة العديد من الإمبراطوريات الصومالية القوية، منها إمبراطورية عجوران والتي حكمت المنطقة في الفترة بين القرنين الرابع عشر والسابع عشر للميلاد والذي برعت في الهندسة الهيدروليكية وبناء الحصون، وكذلك سلطنة عدل والتي كان قائدها الإمام أحمد بن إبراهيم الغازي الملقب "بالفاتح" أول عسكري إفريقي يستخدم المدفعية العسكرية على مدار التاريخ خلال حربه ضد إمبراطورية الحبشة في الفترة الممتدة بين عام 1529 وحتى عام 1543، وأيضا حكام أسرة جوبورون والتي أرغمت سيطرتهم العسكرية حكام مدينة لامو من سلاطين الإمبراطورية العمانية على دفع الجزية للسلطان الصومالي أحمد يوسف، رابع سلاطين أسرة جوبورون والذي حكم في الفترة الممتدة بين عاميّ 1848 حتى 1878. وخلال القرن التاسع عشر وبعد انعقاد مؤتمر برلين عام 1884، أرسلت الإمبراطوريات الأوروبية العظمى جيوشها إلى منطقة القرن الإفريقي بغية السيطرة على هذه المنطقة الاستراتيجية في العالم مما دفع الزعيم محمد عبد الله حسان، مؤسس الدولة الدرويشية، إلى حشد الجنود الصوماليين من شتى أنحاء القرن الإفريقي وبداية واحدة من أطول حروب المقاومة ضد الاستعمار على مدار التاريخ.
ولم تقع الصومال قديما تحت وطأة الاستعمار. حيث تمكنت دولة الدراويش من صد هجوم الإمبراطورية البريطانية أربع مرات متتالية وأجبرتها على الانسحاب نحو الساحل. ونتيجة لشهرتها الواسعة على مستوى الشرق الأوسط وأوروبا اعترفت بها كل من الدولة العثمانية والإمبراطورية الألمانية كحليف لهما خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى، وبذلك بقيت السلطة المسلمة الوحيدة المستقلة على أرض القارة الإفريقية. وبعد انقضاء ربع قرن من إبقاء القوات البريطانية غير قادرة على التوغل داخل الأراضي الصومالية، هُزمت دولة الدراويش في عام 1920 عندما استخدمت القوات البريطانية الطائرات خلال معاركها في إفريقيا لقصف "تاليح" عاصمة الدولة الدرويشية وبذلك تحولت كل أراضي الدولة إلى مستعمرة تابعة للإمبراطورية البريطانية. كما واجهت إيطاليا نفس المقاومة من جانب السلاطين الصوماليين ولم تتمكن من بسط سيطرتها الكاملة على أجزاء البلاد المعروفة حالياً بدولة الصومال إلا خلال العصر الفاشي في أواخر عام 1927 واستمر هذا الاحتلال حتى عام 1941 حيث تم استبداله بالحكم العسكري البريطاني. وظل شمال الصومال مستعمرة بريطانية في حين تحول جنوب الصومال إلى دولة مستقلة تحت الوصاية البريطانية إلى أن تم توحيد شطري الصومال عام 1960 تحت اسم جمهورية الصومال الديموقراطية.
ونتيجة لعلاقاتها الأخوية والتاريخية مع مختلف أقطار الوطن العربي، تم قبول الصومال عضواً في جامعة الدول العربية عام 1974. كما عملت الصومال على توطيد علاقاتها بباقي الدول الإفريقية، فكانت من أولى الدول المؤسسة للاتحاد الإفريقي، كما قامت بدعم ومساندة المؤتمر الوطني الإفريقي في جنوب إفريقيا ضد نظام الفصل العنصري، وكذلك دعم المقاتلين الإيرتريين خلال حرب التحرير الإيريترية ضد إثيوبيا. وكونها إحدى الدول الإسلامية كان الصومال واحداً من الأعضاءالمؤسسين لمنظمة المؤتمر الإسلامي وكذلك عضواً في منظمة الأمم المتحدة وحركة عدم الانحياز. وبالرغم من معاناته جراء الحرب الأهلية وعدم الاستقرار على المستوى الداخلي، نجح الصومال في إنشاء نظام اقتصادي حر يفوق العديد من الأنظمة الاقتصادية الإفريقية الأخرى حسب دراسة لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة.
