Check that "Markdown" is selected as file type before creating the XLIFF

I downloaded XLIFF Manager but it throws me an error: "Error processing JSON file [path][filename].md.xlf (The system cannot find the specified file)"

Well I didn't do anything with JSON and if XLIFF Manager doesn't create the required .xlf file I don't know where it would be coming from because I pointed it to an .md file. I have no .xlf file.

I specified the .md file I want to translate, set source and target languanges, markdown and UTF-8 and hit "Create XLIFF". I don't see that I would or could do anything else. Yes, I did look at the documentation. I'm working under German Windows 11.

No luck ...

XLIFF Manager supports markdown. You can see it in [url removed]

Hi Rodolfo and CafeTran,

first of all: sorry for the late reply – I was pretty busy during the past few days.

I had a look at XliffManager, Rodolfo. It doesn't specifically mention markdown, so I a little reluctant to test it. So far it seems to import only what Trados itself can do anyway.

As for CafeTran's tips: thank you very much, they do look and sound useful. Just ... I don't know how to use them. I downloaded the macro, but in which environment do I apply it to the file? I also downloaded the chained filter from the io groups but same problem: How do I get memoQ to take note of this filter?

I'd be grateful for further directions.

I have tested the macro TagMarkdownAsHiddenText with Trados 2022. The tagged Markdown file looks like this in Trados:

I have created a pseudo-translation in Trados and exported it. In Ms Word I selected all text in the translation, removed the "Hidden Text" font attribute*) and saved as plain text with the extension ".md". I opened the file in One Markdown and found that it is a valid Markdown file:

(A lot of tags indeed… The double and triple tags that are separated by a space could be combined to reduce the number of tags.)

I am talking about the standalone XLIFF Manager, not the Trados plugin.

With XLIFF Manager you create XLIFF from your Markdown files and translate the XLIFF in Trados or MemoQ. When ready, convert the translateed XLIFF back to Markdown and deliver.

As far as I can tell, XLIFF Manager only starts working once I have a project in Trados. Which means that I would need to have imported the .md file already – and at that stage things have already gone wrong.

I don't see how XLIFF Manager would help me importing the .md file correctly. Perhaps you could explain further what you had in mind for my problem?

Li-Hsiang, my markdown file is not complex at all, it is hardly more than a text file, there are just heading hierarchies, the odd bold format and some graphics buttons, links and screenshots. I found that I can process it as a text file in memoQ, but it would be nice to handle the graphics and links as graphics and links: easier to work with, and a lower risk of errors.

CafeTran, your screenshot looks good. My Trados version is Trados Studio 2022. When I imported the .md file it handled links and buttons well (better than memoQ) but messed up a paragraph break between heading and text which resulted in a significant error in the file. And in the output file it deleted the line breaks with in a paragraph (my client has all sentences in a separate line). That meant I would have to check not only my actual translation but also the entire file format. I feel that is too risky because I could easily overlook something.

My memoQ version is 10.0.10, as I explained in my original posting. That is the whole point in fact: This version does not have an import filter for markdown, which is why I would like to add just this one filter to my existing installation and which is why I am posting my question in this forum dedicated to memoQ.

Which version of Trados are you using? And what are the problems?

My sample Markdown looks like this in Trados 2024 (with formatting tags hidden):

Display in memoQ 11.2 is also good. There you also have the HTML WYSIWYG display.

Transit NXT doesn't support .md, at least not on my computer.

I wrote an md extractor and md builder longtime ago, but they run merely on my pc.

I noted that Pandoc runs in my browser and liked that. So I tested it but found that it doesn't work for my purposes.

It doesn't handle all of my markdown code correctly and I found no way of converting the translated html file into the proper markdown format after translation. Which means that I cannot use the result.

Thanks everybody for your suggestions.

I'll look into Pandoc, interesting!

(But I will certainly not throw my client's file into the mouth of a greedy LLM, let alone translate it for me. I'm here because I can do translations myself and am in fact booked specifically for that skill.)

What I was hoping to get is simply the extra import filter that I can add to my memoQ installation (which is why I asked my question in the memoQ forum). Is there no way to add one filter?

That's indeed not what you want. A good .md filter would allow WYSIWYG display in the grid. Perhaps something like:

If you don't mind using an LLM for the translation, you can send the text as it is to an LLM with a clear instruction: "You must preserve ALL Markdown elements and syntax. Translate only the human-readable text." LLMs understand and handle Markdown perfectly. And you will get a .md translated with the original formating.

You may try Pandoc: [url removed]
If your CAT tool supports HTML, you may convert the .md file into .html, translate the text with your CAT tool. Finally, use Pandoc to convert the CAT HTML output back to .md.
Generally, your formating, hyperlinks and structure will be kept this way.
Otherwise, converting the .md file into .docx is fine too.

Hi there,

I am working on a test for a new client who sends me markdown files. Trados (my preferred tool) kind of works but is not handling this format as well as it should. That's why I tried memoQ.

Here, I can import the markdown files as text only but of course then all the marks come up as regular text. Manageable but not helpful. Still, memoQ handles the file format better than Trados, so I'd like to find a way of importing the files properly to have the marks as actual tags.

I see that newer versions of memoQ have a markdown filter but my version doesn't (translator.pro 10.0.10 – because I have been working a lot less for the agency that I mainly used it for, at some point upgrading made no sense).

Is there anywhere I can download a markdown filter for memoQ?
