Problem

A method for manufacturing (meta)acrylates wherein dehydration/esterification is performed on alkylene oxide adducts of glycerin or diglycerin and on (meta)acrylic acid in the presence of an inhibitor comprising an acid catalyst and copper compound in addition to a phenolic compound.

A method for manufacturing (meta)acrylates according to claim 1, wherein said copper compound is cupric halide.

The invention relates to manufacturing methods wherein (meta)acrylates are obtained from alkylene oxide adducts of glycerin compounds, and belongs to the field of (meta)acrylate manufacture.

In industrial terms, (meta)acrylates are manufactured through dehydration/esterification reactions involving (meta)acrylic acid and alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. In this situation, a polymerization reaction might occur concurrently during the manufacturing process due to the fact that the (meta)acryloyl group in (meta)acrylates is a functional group that polymerizes easily.

In industrial-scale manufacturing, a concurrent polymerization reaction, however slight, is a significant problem.
In other words, the high-molecular-weight component generated by a polymerization reaction is generally a high-viscosity gel-like substance and is often difficult to remove by means of routine cleaning implemented after each batch. Accordingly, even if the quantity of by-product per batch is slight, said by-product accumulates with each additional batch, ultimately causing obstruction of the reactor. As a result, operations must be stopped to disassemble the reactor, the polymeric substance causing the obstruction must be removed, and each component of the reactor must be cleaned thoroughly, reducing productivity dramatically.

In addition, since polymerization reactions of the (meta)acryloyl group are exothermic reactions, if radical polymerization of the reactant and the product progresses continuously during manufacturing and results in a runaway reaction, safety concerns over the release of a great quantity of heat in a short period of time will result.

Accordingly, methods for inhibiting the polymerization of the (meta)acryloyl group in industrial manufacturing of (meta)acrylates have long been proposed.
Specifically, these include methods such as performing an esterification reaction in an oxygenated atmosphere, or adding a polymerization inhibitor to a reaction solution and then performing the esterification reaction (Patent Literature 1 and 2).
As a result of these methods, polymerization inhibition is effective for most (meta)acrylates, the frequency with which operations must be stopped due to obstruction caused by polymeric substances is reduced, and the risk of runaway reactions can be greatly minimized.
