Detrás del carromato viene la retaguardia con otra docena de

—Me resulta extraño ver a tantos soldados para tan pocos presos.

—No tengo ni idea.
Luisa contesta de forma escueta, no quiere saber nada de ejércitos
ni combates.
Mientras caminamos, observo sin perder detalle a la extensa comitiva
entrando con paso cansino dentro del cuartel. Cuando llegamos a la
puerta de entrada, la curiosidad me empuja a echar un vistazo. Tan sólo
veo a los últimos soldados y caballos girando hacia un patio interior.

This morning I prefer to walk without our customary escort and I enjoy a new sense of freedom. We are just reaching one of the corners of the vast headquarters when we see, not far away, several mounted soldiers coming through the main gate. They ride in pairs and, judging from their disheveled and dirty appearance, one would say they had come from somewhere far away.
Behind them come four mules pulling a large cart converted into a cage for men. High, thick bars ensure that no prisoners escape. I can make out at least five captives behind the black bars. They look like natives from some inland tribe, but I’m not very sure; I am still not very familiar with our nearest neighbours.
Following the wagon is the rearguard with another dozen soldiers, also on horseback.
“It’s strange to see so many soldiers for so few prisoners. Are we at war?” I ask naively.
“I have no idea,” Luisa replies tersely, she doesn’t want to know anything about armies and fighting.
As we walk, I watch closely the long procession wearily entering the post. When we get to the entrance gate my curiosity impels me to have a look. I just see the last few soldiers and horses turning into an indoor courtyard.
I can’t make out the cart or its occupants; I suppose they are taking them to the cells. Poor people, they didn’t seem like criminals to me, they just looked like simple natives.
