Source text - English Anatomy includes those structures that can be seen grossly (without the aid of magnification) and microscopically (with the aid of magnification). Typically, when used by itself, the term anatomy tends to mean gross or macroscopic anatomy—that is, the study of structures that can be seen without using a microscopic. Microscopic anatomy, also called histology, is the study of cells and tissues using a microscope.
Anatomy forms the basis for the practice of medicine. Anatomy leads the physician toward an understanding of a patient’s disease, whether he or she is carrying out a physical examination or using the most advanced imaging techniques. Anatomy is also important for dentists, chiropractors, physical therapists, and all others involved in any aspect of patient treatment that begins with an analysis of clinical signs. The ability to interpret a clinical observation correctly is therefore the endpoint of a sound anatomical understanding.
Observation and visualization are the primary techniques a student should use to learn anatomy. Anatomy is much more than just memorization of lists of names. Although the language of anatomy is important, the network of information needed to visualize the position of physical structures in a patient goes far beyond simple memorization. Knowing the names of the various branches of the external carotid artery is not the same as being able to visualize the course of the lingual artery from its origin in the neck to its termination in the tongue. Similarly, understanding the organization of the soft palate, how it is related to the oral and nasal cavities, and how it moves during swallowing is very different from being able to recite the names of its individual muscles and nerves. An under¬standing of anatomy requires an understanding of the context in which the terminology can be remembered.
How can gross anatomy be studied?
The term anatomy is derived from the Greek word temnein, meaning “to cut.” Clearly, therefore, the study of anatomy is linked, at its root, to dissection, although dissection of cadavers by students is now augmented, or even in some cases replaced, by viewing prosected (previously dissected) material and plastic models, or using computer teaching modules and other learning aids.
Anatomy can be studied following either a regional or a systemic approach.
■ With a regional approach, each region of the body is studied separately and all aspects of that region are studied at the same time. For example, if the thorax is to be studied, all of its structures are examined. This includes the vasculature, the nerves, the bones, the muscles, and all other structures and organs located in the region of the body defined as the thorax. After studying this region, the other regions of the body (i.e., the abdomen, pelvis, lower limb, upper limb, back, head, and neck) are studied in a similar fashion.
■ In contrast, in a systemic approach, each system of the body is studied and followed throughout the entire body. For example, a study of the cardiovascular system looks at the heart and all of the blood vessels in the body. When this is completed, the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves) might be examined in detail. This approach continues for the whole body until every system, including the nervous, skeletal, muscular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, lymphatic, and reproductive systems, has been studied.
Each of these approaches has benefits and deficiencies. The regional approach works very well if the anatomy course involves cadaver dissection but falls short when it comes to understanding the continuity of an entire system throughout the body. Similarly, the systemic approach fosters an understanding of an entire system throughout the body, but it is very difficult to coordinate this directly with a cadaver dissection or to acquire sufficient detail.
Important anatomical terms
The anatomical position
The anatomical position is the standard reference position of the body used to describe the location of structures (Fig. 1.1). The body is in the anatomical position when standing upright with feet together, hands by the side and face looking forward. The mouth is closed and the facial expression is neutral. The rim of bone under the eyes is in the same horizontal plane as the top of the opening to the ear, and the eyes are open and focused on something in the distance. The palms of the hands face forward with the fingers straight and together and with the pad of the thumb turned 90° to the pads of the fingers. The toes point forward.

¿CÓMO PUEDE ESTUDIARSE LA ANATOMÍA MACROSCÓPICA?
El término anatomía, se deriva del griego “temnein”, que significa “cortar”. Claramente, por lo tanto, el estudio de la antatomía está vinculado, en su raíz, a la disección, a pesar de que la disección de cadáveres por parte de los estudiantes ha aumentado, o inclusive en algunos casos reemplazado por ver material procesado (previamente diseccionado) y modelos plásticos, o usando módulos de enseñanza computarizada y otras ayudas de aprendizaje.
El estudio de la anatomía se puede abordar desde una perspectiva regional o sistémica.
Desde una perspecitiva regional, cada región del cuerpo se estudia separadamente y cada aspecto de esa region se estudia al mismo tiempo. Por ejemplo, si hay que estudiar el tórax, se estudian todas sus estructuras. Esto incluye la vasculatura, los nervios, huesos, músculos y todas las otras estructuras y órganos localizados en la región del cuerpo definida como tórax. Después de estudiar esta región, las otras regiones del cuerpo (Ej.: el abdomen, la pelvis, extremidades inferiores, extremidades superiores, la espalda, la cabeza y el cuello) se estudiar de la misma forma.
En contraste, desde una perspectiva sistémica, cada “sistema” del cuerpo se estudia y sigue a lo largo del cuerpo entero. Por ejemplo, un estudio del sistema cardiovascular mira al corazón y luego a todos los vasos sanguinios del cuerpo. Cuando termina, el sistema nervioso (el cerebro, la médula espinal y todos los nervios) se examinan en detalle. La posición anatómica
La posición anatómica es la referencia estandar para la posición del cuerpo utilizada para describir la ubicación de las estructuras (Fig. 1.1). El cuerpo se halla en posición anatómica cuando está erguido con los pies juntos, las manos en los lados y el rostro mirando al frente, la boca está cerrada y la expresión facial es neutral. Los huesos de la cavidad ocular se encuentra en el mismo plano horizontal que la parte superior del oído, y los ojos están abiertos y enfocados en algo a la distancia. Las palmas de las manos están hacia el frente con los dedos derechos y juntos con la yema del pulgar en ángulo de 90 grados en relación a las yemas de los demás dedos. Los dedos de los pies apuntan al frente.

Una costumbre arraigada en Estados Unidos es regalar rosas a tu pareja el Día de San Valentín. Hace tiempo éste era un regalo muy caro: en el hemisferio norte el Día de San Valentín no cae en verano, cuando las rosas florecen, sino en lo más crudo del invierno. Por este motivo, hasta hace poco las rosas que vendían las florerías eran rosas cultivadas en invernaderos. Actualmente, sin embargo, la mayoría de las rosas que se venden el día de San Valentín proceden de Sudamérica, principalmente de Colombia, donde se puede cultivar rosas en invierno sin problema.
¿Es bueno que ahora podamos comprar en invierno nuestras rosas en el extranjero? La inmensa mayoría de los economistas responden afirmativamente: el comercio internacional, en el cual los países se especializan en la producción de diferentes bienes que intercambian entre sí, beneficia a todos los países implicados. En el capítulo 2 ya explicamos el principio básico de que existen ganancias derivadas del comercio; se trata de un principio que se aplica tanto a países como a individuos.
No obstante, con relativa frecuencia tanto los políticos como la gente no están tan convencidos de las ventajas del comercio. De hecho, durante la campaña presidencial de 1996 uno de los candidatos utilizó la ocasión del día de San Valentín para visitar un invernadero en New Hampshire, donde censuró las importaciones de rosas procedentes de América del Sur por ser una amenaza al empleo en Estados Unidos.
Hasta este momento hemos analizado la economía como si fuera autosuficiente, como si la economía produjera todos los bienes que consume y viceversa. Esto es cierto para la economía mundial en su conjunto. Sin embargo, no se cumple para cada uno de los países en particular. Es cierto que hace 40 años Estados Unidos exportaba únicamente una pequeña proporción de los que producía e importaba únicamente una pequeña proporción de lo que consumía. Sin embargo, desde entonces, tanto las importaciones como las exportaciones de Estados Unidos han crecido mucho más deprisa de lo que lo ha hecho la economía estadounidense en su conjunto. En otros países, incluso, el comercio internacional ha cobrado, en relación con el tamaño de sus economías, mayor importancia que en los Estados Unidos. Para tener una idea completa de cómo funcionan las economías nacionales, debemos comprender el comercio internacional.
Este capítulo analiza la teoría económica del comercio internacional. Comenzamos con el modelo de la ventaja comparativa, el cual como ya vimos en el capítulo 2 explica por qué existen ganancias derivadas del comercio internacional. A deeply embeded American tradition is making a present to your partner on St. Valentine’s day. Time ago this was a very expensive present: in the northern hemisfery San Valentine’s day doesn’t happen in Summer. For this reason, until not long ago, roses sold at the flower shop were grown in a green house. Currently, however, most of roses sold in St. Valentine’s day are original from Southamerica, mainly from Colombia, where growing flowers in winter is no trouble.
¿Is it good that we are now allowed to buy our roses in winter abroad? The vast majority of economist answer affirmatively: International Commerce, in which countries specialize in the production of different goods that trade among each other, is beneficial for all countries involved. In chapter 2 we already explained the basic principle that there are earnings derivated from commerce; it’s a principle that applies to countries as to individuals.
Nevertheless, with relative frequency, as politicians as people are not so convinced of the advantages of commerce. In fact, during the presidential campaing of 1996, one of the candidates used the ocasion of St. Valentine’s day to visit a green house in New Hampshire, where censored rose importations original from South America for being a threat to Employment in the United States.
Until this moment we have analized economy as if it was self suficient, as if economy produced all goods that consumes and viceversa. This is true for the world economy as a whole. However it is not true for every country in particular. It is true that 40 years ago the United States exported only a small proportion of what produced and imported only a small proportion of what consumed. However, since then, importations as exportations from the United States have grown much faster than what has grown the United States economy as a whole. In other countries, even, international commerce has gained, in relation with the small size of their economies, majour importance that in the United States. Just to have a complete idea of how national economies work, we must comprehend International commerce.
This chapter analizes the economic theory of international commerce. We shall begin with the model of comparative advantage wich, as we already saw in chapter two, explains why exists earnings derivated from international commerce. However, it is also important to coprehend why some individuals can be injured by international commerce as also study the effects of protectionist policies employed in countries to limit importations and foment exportations.

La modernización de la industria vitivinícola a mediados del siglo XIX trajo consigo un incremento del comercio de vinos. Un papel importante en este proceso fue el desempeñado por los “catalanes de Vicuña Mackenna”, un destacado grupo de peninsulares que se avecindaron en Chile desde principios del siglo XX. Casi todas sus bodegas estaban ubicadas en Vicuña Mackenna, avenida que tenía contacto directo con la red de ferrocarriles del sur por medio de la unión ferroviaria de la antigua estación San Eugenio, los situó en un punto estratégico para dominar la venta de sus productos.
Este grupo se caracterizó por manejar los mercados de ventas del vino en Santiago y sus alrededores. Compraban el vino a los productores para luego venderlo a los minoristas, a tabernas, cantinas, y pulperías, donde eran adquiridos por los consumidores. Su abastecimiento de vinos proveía de viticultores medianos y grandes que los dotaban del producto a granel, el que luego era elaborado de forma rudimentaria, envasándose en “chuícos” (quince litros), “damajuanas” (diez litros) o “garrafas” (cinco litros), apara luego ser entregado a los bares y restaurantes de puerta en puerta, sobre la base de pago al contado y la devolución o intercambio de los envases vacíos. Para el reparto de los vinos recurrían a camiones de cinco toneladas, con carrocería que cubría solamente la parte central, pero a nivel lo más bajo posible, pegado a los ejes, para facilitar la manipulación de los envases sin tener que levantarlos en exceso. Los envases vacíos ya devueltos eran ubicados sobre la caja central de la carrocería.
Estos comerciantes, que se autocalificaban de “industriales”, fueron extraordinariamente cumplidores y honestos en sus contratos y formas de pago. Prueba de esto fue el valor de la “letra de catalán”, cuya fuerte de solvencia financiera les permitía comprar a largo plazo, generalmente con pago a través de “una letra por cada mil arrobas (cuarenta mil litros), con el primer vencimiento a noventa días”; si el viticultor interesado en obtener financiamiento tenía alguna estrechez financiera, recurría a la llamada “venta en verde” o de futura cosecha. Los aceptantes de las letras tenían muy claro que el prestigio de su firma era la base de su negocio, pues si llegaban a fallar en el cumplimiento de sus compromisos, automáticamente dejaban de ser clientes confiables para los vitivinicultores.
Translation - English THE CHILEAN “NEGOCIANTS”
Modernization of the wine industry in the middle 19th century brought along an increasing of the wine commerce. A fundamental role in this process was performed by the “catalanes de Vicuña Mackenna”, a notorious group of penninsulars who stablish themselves in Chile at the beginning of the 20th century. Almost all their wine cellars were located in Vicuña Mackenna, avenue which had direct contact with the southern railway network through the railway connection of old train station San Eugenio and placed them in a strategic position to dominate their product sales.
This group was characterised for leading the wine market in Santiago and surrounding areas. They bought wine from the producers to then sale it to retail stablishments, taberns, cantines and local stores where it was acquired by consumers. Their stock supply came from middle and majour size producers that provided them with bulk product wich was later produced in a rudimentary manner, bottling it up in “chuicos” (fifteen litres), “damajuanas” (ten litres), or “garrafas” (five litres), to then be delivered to bars and restaurants door by door, on the basis of cash payment and devolution or exchange of the empty containers. For the wine distribution they employed five tonelade truks, with a body that covered only the central part, but at the lower level posible, near the axes, to facilitate the containers handling without need to lift them in excess. The empty containers were placed on the center of the truck bodywork.
These dealers, called themselves “industrials”, they were extraordinarily dependable and honest in the fullfilment of their contracts and payments. Proof of this was the value of the “letra de catalán” (cathalan bills of exchange), whose strong financial solvency allow them to buy in the long term, usually with payment trough “one bill every one thousand arrobas (forty thousand litres), with the first expiration within ninety days”; if the wine maker interested in financing had financial problems, he called on the “venta en verde (sale in green)” or of future harvest. Bill takers, were very clear on that the prestige of their firm was the base of their business because if they came to fail in the fullfilment of their comitments, automatically they would stop being reliable customers for the wine-makers.

I started my bilingual life as a Tour Guide in Chile many years ago. I've met many visitors from different English speaking countries who came here to discover the many experiences that we have to offer.
During their visit, our customers discuss with me a wide range of aspects about life in Chile, our culture, their culture, finances, politics, history, languages, several professions, their worldview and the universe.
As I worked as a Tour Guide, I also made use of English and Spanish as an interpreter, translator, and others for several people and companies. I got used to do teamwork for several companies and people, both in the field and at the office.
I developed the ability to quickly translate dossiers and more complicated texts legal and medically related. Translate simultaneously and proofread of introduction letters from companies I worked for.
I learned to have respect for those who have been working in my field for a longer time as well as share what I knew with those who were just getting started. Freelancing can be a great chance for you to become part of the community and interacting with it.
As a translator I hope to put. in practice all the skills and values that I have collected over the years and put it in the service of people who need sensible and sensitive people who might need my help to bring their ideas across the language barrier so they can all share their knowledge and get to know each other.
