Introduction
PET/CT (positron emission tomography/computed tomography) is a hybrid imaging device available for clinical diagnosis, introduced commercially in 2001. In single-gantry PET/CT scanners, the x-ray CT provides high resolution anatomical images and PET provides low resolution functional images of the same patient. By overlaying co-registered PET and CT data, clinicians have a powerful noninvasive imaging tool for detecting and locating disease. PET/CT imaging improves the diagnostic accuracy of 18F-FDG (18F-fluorodeoxyglucose) PET scans in cancer patients.
Compared to CT, PET images are noisy and have an inherent low resolution. Standard smoothing of PET images may further impair PET resolution, making it both difficult to detect small lesions and determine the location of radiotracer uptake. Also, standard methods of CT-based attenuation correction of PET images (CT-AC PET) can erroneously create or remove small regions of uptake near metal implants, impairing the detection of deep hypermetabolic regions. The purpose of this thesis is to investi-gate improved methods of fusing the PET and CT data sets in order to enhance the PET image quality, thereby providing more accurate PET quantitation, localization, and increased small lesion detectability.
Method
In this dissertation, a three-tiered approach to improving PET image quality is proposed. The components of this approach are PET data acquisition, incorporation of CT anatomical data into PET processing, and CT-based attenuation correction of PET, respectively. The approach is detailed a series of four papers that comprise the bulk of this thesis. The author of this dissertation is the first author of all the papers, three of which have been published or accepted for publication. The fourth (Part D, below) has been submitted for publication and has been presented in a public forum.

While pur mouts have the power to please, they're also rife with ways to embarrass. And it's not just the rdiculous things we might say. Take bad breath, for example,. It can take your - or someone else's - breath away! Unfortunately, we may not even realize we have bad breath until the humiliating moment when a friend or lover points it out to us.
Bad breath can merely be a lingering sign of a garlic - or onion-rich diet. But chronic bad breath - medically known as halitosis or fetororis - is more often a sign of smoking or chewing tobacco and have poor dental hygiene. It can also signal that something is going terribly awry in your mouth, such as an abscessed or impacted tooth or a gum, mouth or tongue disease. About 85% of cases of bad breath originate in the mouth itself. The gastrointestinal or respiratory tracts are responsible for the last.
If you suffer from noxius morning breath, it may be a sign of dry mouth, which can result from breathing through your mouth at night from any of a number of medications and from certain disorders. (See adry Mouth or Exessive Thirst, above.)
Halitosis can signal postnatal drip, strep throat, sinus infection, or other respiratory tract conditions. It's also a major sign of tonsilloliths (aka tonsil stones) - small, whitish, foul-smelling globules of food particles, dried mucus and bacteria that lodge in the folds of the tonsils. Having elarged, deep-creviced tonsils or recurrent bouts of tonsillitis encourages the nasty buildup of such debris.

WHAT'S THE SECRET to women's superior emotional perception? According to a new study, it's all in the timing.
When it comes to dealing with life's everyday hassles, women say they are more responsive to their husbands' stress than vice versa. Men say the same thing about themselves. "There's a cultural stereotype that women are more supportive than men," says Lisa Neff, a psychologist at the University of Toledo. Many researchers chalk this sex difference up to women's natural tendency to nurture.
But for psychologists, something didn't add up: When researchers watched married couples interact in the lab, men expressed supportive emotions as skillfully as did women. If, for example, a woman told her husband that she was struggling to lose weight, he generally responded with as much care, encouragement and consideration as a woman would to her husband.
What changes when married couples are away from the prying eyes of the lab? For one, in the real world, women react more quickly to their partner's stress than men do. Husbands don't always spring into immediate action, according to Neff's study, which appeared in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. "It's not that men can't be supportive," she says. "It's that they are doing it at the wrong time." Perhaps some men wait until they are certain their wives are really upset. Or maybe some newly married men are just inexperienced. Neff says her study, using diaries of marital interaction and reported stress levels, doesn't pinpoint how men are lacking during tough times, just that women say they are.
Part of the imbalance, says Neff, is that wives may not communicate their needs directly to their husbands. Previous research suggests that spouses, especially women, have roundabout ways of telling their partners that they need extra care and encouragement. Studies also show that women are more empathetic and better at reading nonverbal emotions than are men, which may account for speedier female reactions.
But the data indicate another dynamic. During times of higher stress, women report that men have a tendency to compound their distress by becoming hostile and negative, says Neff. And that undermines whatever support men might otherwise give.
