Source text - Portuguese Há muito tempo, foi encontrada em uma choupana isolada numa clareira de uma floresta, uma carta de conteúdo sombrio, em cujas linhas lia-se uma história fantástica de loucura, amor e morte. Embora sua veracidade nunca tenha sido comprovada, o obscuro teor de sua narrativa foi contado e recontado por muitas vezes, causando espanto em seus ouvintes.
Tal era a carta:
“Escrevo este relato porque acredito que esta história insana deva ser conhecida por outros, mas minhas mãos tremem, meu corpo sua e minha visão está turva. Esta certamente será minha última noite, sinto calafrios e sei que o espectro da morte está a me espreitar, escrever é um sacrifício, mas preciso registrar os eventos recentes, em partes para me eximir de minha culpa.
Tudo aconteceu por causa de meu amor por Adeline. Há tempos a adorava, sem nunca receber dela sequer um olhar de assentimento. Eu a via e algo dentro de mim me consumia, me devorava de maneira insuportável. Eu não tinha esperança alguma de que ela algum dia voltasse seus nobres sentimentos para mim.
Então, num dia particularmente melancólico, quando o tempo estava cinza e agourento e tudo o que me vinha ao pensamento era minha graciosa Adeline, ouvi um comentário de que, oculta nas profundezas da floresta que ladeava a aldeia, havia uma torre habitada por uma fada. Esta fada, diziam, era capaz de atender aos desejos das pessoas que ousassem procurá-la, desde que se pagasse o devido preço.
Era minha única chance de conseguir a única coisa que desejava dia e noite: o coração de Adeline! Lancei-me à floresta e durante horas vaguei procurando a torre a esmo, até avistá-la no centro de uma clareira. Era feita de pedras negras, tomadas pelo musgo e desgastadas pelo tempo. Apesar da decadência e da pouca altura, era uma construção imponente. Dirigi-me a ela e estava prestes a bater a aldrava quando a porta se abriu e vi diante de mim uma mulher de veste e cabelos negros, alta e pálida, que já seria suficientemente impressionante mesmo sem sua característica mais marcante: em suas costas, havia um grande par de asas negras, semelhantes a asas de borboleta.
Enquanto eu encontrava-me estupefato demais para dizer sequer uma saudação, ela elogiou, com voz macia e sibilante, minha audácia por adentrar tão fundo na floresta. Em seguida, perguntou-me o que no mundo eu desejava tanto a ponto de arriscar-me de tal maneira. Sem hesitação respondi-lhe que, mais do que tudo, desejava ter o coração de Adeline. A fada negra então afirmou que me daria o que eu tanto desejava, caso eu estivesse disposto a pagar o preço exigido por ela.
Eu capaz de dar qualquer coisa por Adeline, respondi a ela. Para minha surpresa, o preço cobrado foi apenas uma tarefa que, naquela hora, considerei simplória: ela pediu que eu apenas subisse até o último andar da torre. Caso fosse capaz de fazer isso sem desistir durante o caminho, não importando o que acontecesse, ela me concederia meu maior desejo.
Sendo assim, a fada permitiu minha entrada na torre e comecei meu percurso. Subi dois andares sem encontrar nenhum obstáculo. Porém, as escadas eram íngremes e os degraus, estreitos. Uma atmosfera sombria me envolvia e fazia correr arrepios por minha espinha. Quanto mais eu subia, mais meu coração se inquietava como se previsse algum acontecimento macabro.
Chegando ao terceiro andar, deparei-me com uma porta que bloqueava minha passagem para o lance de degraus que me levaria ao andar seguinte. Tentei abri-la, mas estava trancada. Procurei pelo cômodo vazio por uma chave ou algo q o valesse, mas nada encontrei. Então, ocorreu-me uma ideia sinistra, que não parecia ser fruto de meus pensamentos, mas sim sutilmente sugerida diretamente em minha mente: o buraco da fechadura era pequeno e redondo, e a percepção da única coisa que poderia penetrar ali me causou um pavor indizível, que fez com que meu corpo todo estremecesse.
Mesmo tomado pelo horror como estava, pensei em Adeline e reuni todas as minhas forças para fazer o que era necessário para abrir aquela porta, conforme a ideia que me fora plantada na mente: tirei de um bolso uma faca pequena porém muito afiada que trazia comigo e, de um golpe só, arranquei o dedo mínimo da minha mão esquerda.
Enquanto o sangue jorrava e eu tentava me manter consciente diante da dor e de todo o horror da cena, descarnei o dedo, cuidando para que as falanges não se separassem durante o processo. Por fim, enfiei os ossos no buraco da fechadura, onde couberam com perfeição. Com um pequeno movimento, a porta se abriu.
Retomei minha subida, enquanto amarrava a mão ensanguentada com um pedaço de tecido que havia arrancado de minha camisa. Suava frio, a dor era pungente e incontestável, mas continuei pensando na recompensa que me seria dada ao fim do percurso. Cobri mais dois ou três andares, não saberia dizer ao certo, pois o ferimento, a apreensão em relação aos obstáculos que ainda poderia encontrar e a ânsia por Adeline me atormentavam de maneira a entorpecer minha razão.
Ao chegar a um determinado ponto, comecei a ouvir o que me pareceu o rosnado de um animal feroz. E, com efeito, no andar seguinte havia um cão enorme, de pelagem tão negra quanto os cabelos da fada. Os olhos amarelos estavam fixos em mim enquanto rosnava mostrando os dentes afiados. Como ele não se encontrava exatamente no caminho para a escada que me levaria para o próximo andar, tentei lentamente me dirigir até lá, esperando que o cão não me atacasse. Entretanto, o animal começou a se mover em minha direção, parecendo cara vez mais selvagem. Quanto mais eu tentava avançar em direção às escadas, mas ele me encurralava e mais ferozes eram seus rosnados. Se eu ousasse dar mais um passo adiante, certamente seria sua presa e não sobreviveria ao ataque.
Embora estivesse amedrontado, não considerava a hipótese de desistir e, assim, perder todos os esforços que fizera até ali e abdicar do meu maior desejo. Então, mais uma vez senti como se alguém me sussurrasse uma solução infame para aquele impasse, tão horrenda quanto a anterior. Assim, com movimentos sutis para que o cão não me atacasse, peguei mais uma vez minha faca e, me esforçando para não pensar em quão terrível era aquilo, decepei uma de minhas orelhas e atirei-a a fera que, distraindo-se com o ‘petisco’, liberou minha passagem.
Corri para a escada o mais rápido que pude e subi tantos andares quanto o fôlego me permitiu, sentindo o sangue correr pelo pescoço e encharcar minhas roupas, misturado ao suor. Estava tão apavorado pelo que havia feito e visto que não pensei em improvisar um curativo para a nova ferida que acabara de me infligir. Só pensava em chegar o quanto antes ao topo da torre e finalmente ter em meus braços minha bela Adeline, deixando para trás todas aquelas provações fatídicas.
Porém, mais um tormento aguardava meu espírito alquebrado. Chegando ao último andar, encontrei uma fonte de pedra no centro do cômodo. Depois de observar por algum tempo, mesmo em meio à dor e ao delírio, compreendi que era uma fonte dos desejos e que aquela seria minha última prova. Era necessário que eu oferecesse algum ouro para que meu pedido fosse atendido, mas sabia que não trouxera comigo nenhuma moeda. Então, num último ato alucinado, usei a faca para arrancar meu único dente de ouro e joguei-o na fonte, desejando o coração de Adeline, antes de desfalecer com a dor.
Quando recobrei a consciência, vi diante de mim a fada negra que me convidara a entrar na torre. Em suas mãos, trazia uma bandeja onde jazia uma forma escura, pulsante e sangrenta: o coração de Adeline.”
Dizem que o autor da carta foi encontrado morto, debruçado sobre a mesa, ainda com a pena na mão, o rosto manchado de tinta e o papel com o sangue que ainda escorria de sua mão mutilada.
Translation - English A long time ago, in a lonely shack of a forest glade, a letter with mournful content was found, in which lines was written a wild story of craziness, love and death. Although its veracity could never be proved, the obscure purport of its narrative was told over and over, bringing fearfulness to each and every single listener.
So was the letter:
“I’m writing this because I believe such insane story must be known, but my hands are shaking, my body is sweating, and my vision, turbid. Certainly, this night shall be my last; I have chills all over and I am well aware that the specter of death stalks me. Writing costs to do so, however I need to jot down these recent events, partly in order to exempt myself from guilty.
Everything happened due to my love for Adeline. I have adored her for a long time, never receiving the slightest assent look in return. I gazed her and something inside came to life consuming me, unbearably devouring me. I did not hold any hope she would dedicate her noble feelings to me, though.
It was when, on a singularly melancholic day - in which the sky was grey and ominous and the only thought that came to my mind was Adeline - I heard people discussing that hidden into the deepest deep of the forest surrounding the village was a tower inhabited by a faerie. This faerie, they said, was capable of fulfilling any wishes of whoever dared to seek for her, as long as you paid her price.
That was my only chance of achieving the only thing I craved day and night: Adeline’s heart! I rushed into the forest and for hours I wandered, haphazardly looking for the tower, until I finally saw it in the middle of a glade. It was made of black stones, taken for moss and worn out by time. However, despise its ruin and low height it was an imposing building. I walked to its direction and was about to take the knocker when the door opened and I saw a woman black haired woman wearing black garments, tall and pale, facing me; this would be impressive by itself even without her most outstanding characteristic: a great pair of dark butterfly wings raising on her back.
As I found myself so astounded I could not even utter a greeting; she praised me in a smooth and hissing voice for my daring to come so deep into the forest. Then she asked me what in the whole world I wished so much I could put my life at risk. Without hesitation, I answered that above all things I wished to own Adeline’s heart. Therefore, the dark faerie assured me she would give what I wished so fiercely in the event of being willing to pay her required price.
I would be capable of doing anything for Adeline, I answered. To my surprise, the price she demanded was a task which, on that moment, seemed simply innocent: I had to climb to the top floor of her tower, and if I were capable of it no matter what, she would grant me my greatest desire.
Therefore, the faerie let me go into the tower so I took my way. Two floors I climbed unhindered. The stairs, however, were precipitous and had narrow steps. A gloomy atmosphere creped the air around, making goosebumps run through my spine. The more I climbed, the more my heart felt uneasy, as it could foresee some ghoulish event.
On the third floor, I suddenly met a door blocking my access to the flight of stairs to the next level. I tried to open it, but it was locked. I looked for a key or something alike by the empty room, but found nothing. On that moment, a sinister idea occurred to me, an idea that did not seem to be a product of my mind, but some subtle suggestion placed directly into it: the hole on the lock was small and round and the perception of the single thing that could enter there caused me an unspeakable fear, making my entire frame shiver.
Although I was taken by horror, I laid my thoughts on Adeline and collected all my strength to do what was necessary to open that door, according to the idea placed on my mind: I pulled out of my pocket a small but sharp knife I carried; with one clean cut I ripped out the little finger of my left hand. While blood gushed out and I tried to keep my conscience in midst of pain and horror, I cut the meat off the bone, carefully, for the phalanges not end up detached. Finally, I slipped my bones into the lock where they fitted perfectly. With the slightest of the moves, the door was open.
As I took the climb again I wrapped my bleeding hand with a shred of cloth ripped of my shirt. I was sweating cold with the excruciating pain, but I kept my thoughts on the reward I would receive in the end. I passed through three more floors, or so it seemed. The apprehension of the obstacles yet to come and my yearning for Adeline tormented me to the point of dulling my sanity.
At some point, I heard what sounded as a growl of a murderous beast. And indeed, on the next floor, there was a huge dog with a fur as black as the faerie’s hair. Its black eyes were fixed on me as it growled baring its sharp teeth. Once it was not exactly in the middle of my path to the stairs I slowly tried to move in that way, hoping the dog attacked me not. However, the animal moved in my direction seeming more savage by the second. The more I tried to move to the stairs, the more it put me at bay and its growls increased in ferocity. If I tried to take just one more step I’d certainly become its prey and by any chance would survive.
Albeit I felt afraid I did not consider the possibility of giving up, thereby having all efforts made in vain, in addition to abdicate my greatest will. Then, once more, I felt as if someone whispered to me a wicked resolution to the deadlock, as horrifying as it was previously. Using subtle movements so the dog wouldn’t attack me, I took my knife again and tried my best not to think how awful that was, while chopped off one of my ears and tossed it to the beast; distracted by the ‘snack’ the creature freed my path.
I ran to the stairs the fastest I could and climbed as much floors as my breath allowed me, feeling blood pouring down my neck and soak my clothes, combining with my sweat. I was so terrified for what I had done and seen that did not even come to my mind improvising a bandage for the new wound I had just inflicted on myself. My single thought was to arrive soon on the top of the tower and take within my arms my beautiful Adeline, at last. All that fateful ordeals would be left behind.
However, another martyrdom awaited for my weakened soul. On the last floor I found a stone fountain in the center of the room. After observing it a long time I realized, through pain and delirium, that it was a fountain of wishes and the last task. I needed to offer gold for my wish be granted but I had not brought any coins with me. Thus, in one final hallucinated act I used the knife to pull out my only golden tooth and threw it into the fountain, wishing for Adeline’s heart before passing out with pain.
When I woke up, I saw in front of me the dark faerie who invited me into the tower. In one of her hands she carried a tray in which was led a dark, pulsating, bloody form: the Adeline’s heart.”
They say the author of this letter was found dead over a table with a feather pen still in his hand, the face dirty for the ink, and paper stained by the blood that kept pouring from his crippled hand.
