É o sétimo filho dos lavradores analfabetos Eurídice Ferreira de Melo (Dona Lindu) e Aristides Inácio da Silva. A casa da família, de apenas dois cômodos e chão de terra, não tem luz elétrica nem água encanada.
Junho de 1950 – Aos cinco anos, conhece o pai, que havia migrado para Santos (SP) com outra mulher durante sua gestação. O pai visita Caetés por poucos dias e volta para Santos levando o primogênito Jaime consigo.
Dezembro de 1952 – Passando-se pelo pai, Jaime escreve uma carta orientando Dona Lindu a vender a propriedade em Caetés e se mudar para Santos com as crianças. A família embarca em uma viagem de 13 dias num pau-de-arara até São Paulo, de onde segue para o litoral. | Translation - English October 27, 1945 – Luiz Inácio da Silva is born in Caetés (PE), at the time a district of Garanhuns. June 1950 – At the age of five, he meets his father, who had migrated to Santos, in the state of São Paulo, with another woman during his gestation. His father visits Caetés for a few days and returns to Santos, taking the eldest son Jaime with him.
December 1952 – Pretending to be his father, Jaime writes a letter instructing Dona Lindu to sell the property in Caetés and to move to Santos with her children. The family embarks on a thirteen-day trip on a flatbed truck to São Paulo, from where they head for the coast.
