Source text - Spanish La preparación de una nómina de sabios andalusíes fallecidos antes de 350/961 me ha permitido manejar un material biográfico de cierta extensíon, del que pueden extraerse numerosos datos sobre la vida cultural y social del período en cuestión. Uno de estos aspectos, y no el menos importante, lo constituyen las relaciones de maestros y discípulos y la difusión de las enseñanzas y los conocimientos en esta primera época del Islam en España.
El establecimiento de una relación de los maestros con los que estudiaron los sabios andalusíes muestra, en una primera evaluación de los datos, una notable superioridad númerica de los maestros orientales. Nada hay en ellos que pueda sorprendernos, ya que en esta época, y sobre todo en los inicios de la difusión del Islam en España, era lógico acudir a los centros científicos ya establecidos de tiempo atrás en otras regiones del mundo islámico. Sin desdeñar este aspecto del tema, que espero estudiar con más detalle en un futuro próximo, me propongo presentar ahora un primer esbozo de las relaciones de maestros y discípulos andalusíes. Es ésta una cuestión ya estudiada para épocas posteriores y, en parte, también lo ha sido en el período más primitivo del Islam español: me refiero al trabajo de J. López Ortiz, La recepción de la escuela malequí en España (Madrid, 1931), en el cual se recogen informaciones sobre muchos de los discípulos que estudiaron con las figuras más importantes del malikismo andalusí.
Translation - English Preparing a list of the savants of al-Andalus who died before the year 350/961 has allowed me to study quite a sizeable amount of biographical data, from which a number of conclusions may be drawn regarding the cultural and social life of the period in question. One of these aspects, and not the least important, is the relationship between masters and disciples, and the spread of teachings and knowledge during this first era of Islam in Spain.
Studying the list of masters with whom the savants of al-Andalus studied shows, upon an initial assessment of the data, a significant increase in the number of Middle-Eastern masters. There is nothing surprising in this, given that during this period, and above all during the beginning of the spread of Islam in Spain, it was logical to study at centres of scientific learning in other regions of the Islamic world that were already well-established. Without neglecting this first aspect of the theme, which I hope to study in more detail in the near future, my aim here is to outline the relationships between the masters of al-Andalus and their disciples. This issue has already been studied in connection with later periods and, in part, has also been dealt with in relation to the earliest period of Spanish Islam: for example, the work of J. López Ortiz, The Reception of the Maliki School in Spain (Madrid, 1931), which brings together information about many of the disciples who studied with the most important figures of the maliki madhhab in al-Andalus.
