from time immemorial Explanation: ... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 22 mins (2008-10-19 16:25:09 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- This is a common exaggerated/overtoned usage in Turkish literature and folklore intended to emphasize that the pain of love makes the lover feel as if such pain had been with him/her for a very very long time even if it is not the reality. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2008-10-19 20:13:51 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- There is a similar usage in the Turkish National Anthem (poem version): Ben ezelden beridir hür yaşadım hür yaşarım (I have been free since the beginning and forever shall be so) A Turk may know for how long his nation has been free/independent de facto; however, the poet chooses to reinforce it by using "ezelden beri" because he wants to emphasize the fact that the Turkish nation may not be enslaved under any circumstances (at no time) whatsoever. |
