Erkan, I agree with you 100%, that's not what I meant..
I wanted to say that the asker needs to see the whole picture, and not only check if that particular adjective has been used before in this context.
Precedents are not required for a translation to be correct, that's what I meant.

I partially disagree Michael. Answers are still providing accurate translation for the question, no matter how anyone would interpret it :) If we take one more step, we'll be translating the whole thing otherwise.

I would like to point out that the translation that was requested was "kartonsu", not "kartonsu görünümdeki kumtaşı".
So you need to check if "of cardboard-ish / carboard-like appearance" has been used to describe sandstone.
But the fact that it hasn't been used before does not prove that this is not what the sentence in question means :p

It does not seem to fit in the sentence given, it sounds artificial when put in place. But thanks for the answers, I will cross-reference the answers to see if or not the term 'cardboard-like' has been used in any geological papers or such. There is one semi-relevant source at the moment I found through google.
