If the target audience is the US, another option might be 'graduate certificate' for 'diplomado,' as 'diploma' is not half as common at American universities.

I hope this helps :-)

In the context of a university-conferred credential, it would be helpful to know the requirements to establish equivalence. In this vein, I'd imagine that, to gain admission, students would need to have already earned a suitable degree and, to finish the 'diplomado,' to have met academic requirements that are significantly less (in terms of the time they take to complete) than those required for the master's. If not, then why take the 'diplomado' and not the 'maestría'?

If this is the case, then 'diploma' or 'postgraduate certificate' may be acceptable options for the UK, while 'certificate' or 'graduate certificate' would be good options for the US.

To the asker (George):

As you may have noticed (in Discussion), the references posted by liz askew basically support what I contend above, i.e., that a 'diplomado' is essentially a 'carrera corta' pursued after an initial degree.

It's interesting to note as well that the length of 200 hours of CLEA's diplomado (a link to which I posted in Discussion) is somewhat consistent to the 15-18 credits often needed for a certificate at US universities, where, generally speaking, one credit is equal to 15 hours of instruction (which is precisely the formula we used at Northern Marianas College, where I was involved in course and program assessment in the context of WASC accreditation).

Saludos y suerte desde Vietnam :-)

I chose 'degree' rather than 'diploma' because "diploma" in Spanish **typically** refers to university-level education.

In a c.v. in English, one would typically use the term 'degree', rather than 'diploma' in referring to one's advanced education, reserving 'diploma' for high school.

It running text, one might say 's/he holds a degree in occupational medicine'.

As pointed out in the discussion, occupational medicine is usually a master's degree. It's not a short-term course!!
