principal (under the agency or commission agency)

There appears to be a certain overlap between the "mandato" and the "comisión (mercantil)". Both refer to types of agency, but in general terms, the former is an agency under power of attorney and the latter is a commission agency or commercial agency not requiring formal power of attorney, hence the mandante and the comitente are both "principals" under these arrangements.

The SCJN makes the following distinction:
COMISION MERCANTIL.

According to Javier Becerra in his Dictionary of Mexican Legal Terminology:
mandato: power of attorney, power of representation, agency, agency in fact, agency agreement; a verbal or written agreement whereby a person called mandante (principal) directs and empowers another called mandatario (agent) to take one or more legal actions for his or her account, with or without consideration
comitente: principal, in business law, the principal under a contrato de comisión mercantil...
contrato de comisión mercantil: commission agency agreement, agency agreement.

I don't think there is anything really to be gained in defining both terms in the text of the translation, but you could leave a footnote mentioning that "principal" refers to both types of agency, or you could, for the sake of completeness, just word it as "principal under either the agency or commission agency".
