Aunque estas dos diferencias hacen de la comparación entre los resultados para cada configuración, las tendencias de estos resultados y las conclusiones generales derivadas son aún válidas.

I'm really confused about this sentence. I'd be grateful for any help as I don't understand what "hacen de" means.

There are many instances where "hacer de" is used in Spanish. Wordreference.com particularly, offer several instances of its use.And the way shown in the context is the way I understand it.It is used typically in Latin-América, say, Venezuela.
