This course lasts two years after the completion of which the participants put a "i.G." after their rank, meaning in general staff service (im Generalstabsdienst). Having completed this course, the minimum rank those officers achieve is usually colonel (Oberst). Entre 1937 e 1999, os coroneis tirocinados tinham um distintivo próprio que consistia nos galões de coronel, acrescidos de uma estrela de oficial general. Entre 1929 e 1937 os coroneis tirocinados foram designados brigadeiros, usando aquele distintivo.
