pseudonym

Explanation:
This is another option and this option also includes all of the other answers that i've seen so far. There is more than one way to say this in English so lets's look at some examples. For an author a 'nome de guerra' can also be called a 'pen name'. When referring to computer usage it could be called a 'screen name'. The point is, it's a name that someone uses that isn't their real or true name and the English term that covers all of these uses is 'pseudonym'. HTH.

Example sentence(s):
  • His real name was Robert Smith but he wrote several books under the pseudonym "John Gilbey".

Notes to answerer
Asker: I do't think that's quite it, since I'm talking about something that HAS to be kept secret, illegal, even...

Asker: Thank you anyway!

  -> Kiitos, obrigado, dzienkuje, thanks. Welcome to ProZ.

agree  Marian Greenfield: could be indeed... as you note, all depends on the context... I was thinking of accounts... there are contexts where pseudonym is not the best option...
22 mins
  -> Gracias and thank you.

neutral  Carla G..: it depends on the context, but pseudonym in portuguese is "pseudónimo" (usually used by writers) and not "nome de guerra", which I think is more a "nickname" than a pseudonym
43 mins
  -> OK.

agree  Irina Dicovsky - MD (X): Best option. See Houaiss: n. de guerra: 1 pseudônimo us. pelos maçons em suas reuniões ; 2 pseudônimo ou apelido pelo qual alguém é mais conhecido na sociedade, no meio artístico etc.

nom de guerre

Explanation:
In the US, people that want to sound sophisticated use the French. (That is French, right?)

Otherwise just use "pseudonym" or another suitable synonym.

neutral  Will Matter: This term isn't English, it's French (as you point out). Asker is asking for an English *translation*, not a cognate in another Romance language. Nice that your answer contains an addendum that is *identical* to my answer.
