As barragens de rejeito são usadas para depositar os resíduos e a água gerados a partir do beneficiamento do minério. Para transformar o minério de ferro em um produto rico e que atenda às exigências do mercado internacional, ele precisa, primeiramente, passar pelo processo de beneficiamento. O beneficiamento do minério consiste em separar o material valioso presente nos minerais do restante, que não tem valor comercial. Esse processo de separação geralmente requer a utilização de água e o consequente depósito dos resíduos em barragens.

Em tais situações, aplica-se o processo de tamponamento, denominado “plugagem” ou “plug”, ......

A plugagem da galeria com concreto, argamassa, calda de cimento, ou qualquer material que permita a sua acomodação ou compactação, sem o uso de qualquer equipamento de vibração, sendo o mais usual, o Concreto Auto-adensável.
