Portuguese term or phrase: vitem
Another poser from a historic breadmaking recipe. Here's the whole text, which appears to be in old or uneducated Portuguese:
"Primeiro deitase o açucar, a manteiga e o sal, depois desfase tudo com a mao depoies baiselhe deitando a serveija a pouco e pouco no fim de gastada deitaselhe a farinha para dentro e ligase tudo bem ligado e fica a maça pronta para ser estendida em sima de uma meza com um rollo de pau a te a grossura de menos de um **vitem** depois debe ser curtado com uma faca em palitos do comprimento de um dedo e da largura do mesmo."
Translating from the start of line 3, it says that the pastry (maça=massa) should be rolled out until it is less than the thickness of a "vitem".
Given the curious spelling throughout the text, I wonder if this is a typo for "vintém", an obsolete Portuguese coin worth 20 réais, which was issued up to 1935, so almost certainly in circulation at the time of the recipe's writing.
I'm posting this question in case "vitem"rings bells with anyone.
