a brown kelp Explanation: laminaria japonica is a brown kelp seaweed - see reference. How it gets this name, I am not sure, I thought in classical Latin, "laminaria" meant thin metal, and thus, by extension, coins. But "japonica" is not classical Lating either - the Romans didn´t know about Japan. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2002-12-22 06:58:26 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Laminaria japonica is of course the botanical name. It´s called \"kombu\" in Japan, but it doesn´t seem to have an English name. Reference: http://www.botany.uwc.ac.za/algae/StudentAssignments/natalie... |
