Japanese term or phrase: 明治時代以降は徐々に日常着としての着物の需要 が減り、太物店は淘汰されています。
This is a brief history on how kimono stores changed over the years. The question is 淘汰されています as I can't come up with the right translation. many thanks for your help!

English translation:the number of shops selling kimono textiles dropped
Explanation:
太物店は淘汰された means those kimono textile shops that couldn't sustain their business closed down and only those that could survive in the shrunk market remained operating. Hence, I would translate it as "the number of shops selling kimono textiles dropped".

became almost extinct

Explanation:
淘汰 refers to a de-selection due to something such as a species becoming unfit (to its environment, etc.). As this word is often used in biology, I would render this as "became almost extinct." Touta could mean the number of those shops has declined to zero, but it could also mean the number has been reduced to near zero (not completely gone).

Futomono is a non-silk kimono, or casual kimono, that the first half of the sentence talks about. Due to the decline for their demand, futomono shops became out of fashion. (this is another way to say it)
