Japanese term or phrase: くぼみ
Translating a user manual for a smart phone from JA to EN.

I wish I could upload a graphic here but it's not possible.

This word is used several times to point out the part of the phone
where there is a an "edge".
For example, it is the part where the battery fits into the body of the phone.

Dictionaries give lots of diff. options, none of which applies to this case. (depression, hole etc)
My translation as of now is, "Dent"

I found a link where it is a similar usage for your reference. (see last sentence)

Explanation:
By looking at your reference, I think くぼみ in this context is more like a "slot" or holder type thing that allows the phone to fit.

recessed area

Explanation:
I think you need to apply different Japanese for different situations. If it is where a battery fits, it is usually called a battery compartment, for example.

agree  Krzysztof Łesyk: Precisely. Also, whatever option is chosen, I think "dent" is not right, since it suggests it's a result of a blow.

Recess

Explanation:
"Recess" will fit quite nice and is widely applicable.
However, please note that each manufacturer has their own applicable terms and prferences.
Why not tell your customer - as I always do when I deliver - that your translation was that best word that fits and provide them with other candidates, e.g. indentation or indented area? Maybe they had neglected to provide you with their preferred word list, as is often the case.
This way you present the client with your recommendation and other candidates for their consideration. I'm sure either way that they'll appreciate the feedback and the fact that you're caring about the choice of words to make their document as clear and readily understandable as possible.

Best of luck!
