And the last of the verbs that I'm stumped by, in the phrase: 「特に変化球を思うように操れず、私が見た試合でも引っかけたり、抜けたり、叩きつけたりと苦労していた。」
This is part of a news article reporting the advice given by an older player to a newer player.

My research so far has turned up simply "getting hit" but I am wondering if this is something more specialised — any help greatly appreciated!

Considering the other two phrases are "tipped" and "made it through", it can be safe to assume that the usage of 叩き付ける is to slam, or strike hard as the third possibility that can happen when throwing a screwball. (If my other two answers are accurate).
