colonial characteristics or colonial psychology Explanation: 植民地 - colony (noun)--> colonial (adjective) 根性 - 性質 - characteristics I think "colonial characteristics" is a better translation, as in "Corruption occurs because of colonial characteristics of a country." I seems to me that ["mentality" of a country] doesn't flow with the context. But refering to native residents in a colony, it is better to say they develop "colonial psychology". Psychology emphasizes on emotions and mindsets which affects human behaviors, while "mentality" emphasizes more on interllectual properties/mindsets. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 9 hrs (2016-05-12 02:01:03 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- 私は日本語がただ少し話せます、すみませんでした。でも「植民地根性」の意味が良く分かります。 |

mentality/mindset of colonial subjects Explanation: Colonial mentality は既に良く使われている表現で、どちらかと言うと「自分たちは下位に属する」という劣等感みたいなものを表します。同じマイナスの性格でも、他者に依存して、自分では責任をとらない点など、植民地根性の他の側面も表すなら、インフェリオリティー・コンプレックスのニュアンスの強いcolonial mentality よりは、単に mentality of colonial subjects や、mindset of colonial subjects にした方が、幅は広がるように思います。内容によって、使い分けたら良いかと思います。 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_mentality |

Colonial mentality Explanation: 正確かどうか分かりませんが、これで良いでしょう。 -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 11 hrs (2016-05-12 04:23:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I do not see anything intellectual about mentality. Quite the opposite. Mentality is generally the result of lack of or refusing to use intellect properly. It is more an acquired automatic response to some things or some situations. |
