戒名(かいみょう)は仏弟子としての名前であり、仏さまとしての徳を表す名前です。真言宗の葬儀において、故人の成仏のために、俗名に替えて導師から授けられるのが戒名です。故人は戒名を授かることで仏弟子となり、十三仏の導きを得て、ご先祖さまの一員となり、子孫を代々に亙って守っていく存在となるのです。

戒名は「○〇院△△◎◎居士(女性は大姉)」や「△△◎◎信士(女性は信女)」などが授けられます。「△△」は「道号」といわれ、仏道修行に入ったことをあらわす呼び名ですが、今日では謚(おくりな)として、生前の功績や故人の人柄を表す文字が当てられます。「◎◎」は「法名(ほうみょう)」といわれ、仏さまの名をあらわしているので、「◎◎」のみを戒名ともいいます.戒を授かった仏さまの名としてふさわしい文字が当てられます。道号や戒名に俗名の-字を折り込むこともあります。

「○〇院」は院号といわれ、その起源は天皇が譲位して出家した後に住んだ仏堂の名にちなんで、○○院と呼称したことに始まります。また、江戸時代の将軍や大名には院殿号が授けられました。このことから、寺院の伽藍を建立したり、寺院の興隆に大きな功績のあった故人に授けられてきています。院号は寺院の名にふさわしい文字、故人の徳を称えた文字が当てられます。

戒名は故人の徳を称えるとともに、成仏への祈りと子孫の導きへの願いを込めて授けられる大切な名前です。戒名は菩提寺の過去帳に記載され、大切に後世に受け継がれていきます。
