上、下

English translation: Volume 1, 2

Japanese to English translations [PRO]
Printing & Publishing / Bibliography reference
Japanese term or phrase: 上、下
This appears many times for different books (and/or periodicals, etc.) in a bibliography list of cited references.

The format looks like this:
瀧川政次郎著:『東京裁判をさばく』上、下, 東和社.
It may say (上•下), or (上,下).
Some cited references only say (上). Some only say (下).

All of these seem to be describing details about the name of the book or the name of the periodical.

Can you please provide the English translation for this and what it means?

Thanks in advance.

English translation:Volume 1, 2
Explanation:
I have looked into dictionaries but I could not find the exact equivalents of 上、下.
Although I am not happy with the translation either, we would have to do with the simple translation, volume 1 (of 2) and 2 (of 2)

agree  Dr. M. S. Niranjan: Normally, 上 and 下 would be translated as Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 respectively. However, when translating 下, one has to be careful and check how many volumes are there before that volume. Sometimes, there may be three volumes in all - 上, 中, and 下.
