agree  Kurt Hammond: this is absolutely correct. Pick a lens at http://cweb.canon.jp/ef/lineup to see a graphic depiction of the inside of a lens. You can see that the elements are arranged in groups. Sometimes not obvious what's a group-it has to do with how the light bends.
