-------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day11 hrs (2009-07-03 17:31:28 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- That's good to hear, Tina-san, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. |

Reference information: Rift grain, bastard grain, comb grain and needle-point grain All mean the board was rift cut from the log. When you look at the end grain of such a board, the angle between the growth rings and the face will be either close to 45° or between 30° and 60°, depending on whose definition you use. Usually the terms rift grain and comb grain are used when you expect the angle to be near 45°. Bastard grain usually means an angle of 30° to 60°. http://www.iverswoodshop.com/Articles/Wood Basics/10. Grain.... http://www.escompo.co.jp/topkisotishiki.htm Bastard grain indicates that the growth-ring placement is clearly neither flat grain (板目) nor edge grain (柾目), but somewhere in the 30° to 60° range. http://74.125.153.132/search?q=cache:fyHnlKCh-goJ:http://www... Bastard sawn: Syn: Bastard grain. Lumber or other wood products in which the annual rings make angles of 30° to 60° with the surface of the piece. Neither flat sawed or quarter sawed. http://drykiln.sd61.bc.ca/Glossary/b.htm Bastard Grain Used in reference to lumber with growth rings that form angles of 30 to 60 degrees with wide surfaces of the lumber. http://www.cambridgedoor.com/pdf/veneer.pdf rift sliced, rift sawn Also termed "comb-grain". Refers to method of producing veneer by slicing or sawing at an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the annual rings to bring out certain figures produced by the medullary rays, which are especially conspicuous in oak. http://www.woodlinks.com/Careers/gloss/r.html |
