Japanese term or phrase: 修羅場
Dear ProZ members,

in a cartoon two people are fighting, and they appear to be very strong. Another man comments:

彼らはいろいろな修羅場をくぐっていますからね
(It's because they went through various scenes of carnage.)

Translating 修羅場 literally works perfectly in the context, but I was wondering whether it would be better to interpret it as "difficulties", "hardships".

What is the correct nuance, in your opinion? How would a native perceive it?

Thank you very much!

English translation:Hardship/battle
Explanation:
"Both of them have been through a lot" would be a natural expression that works in most cases.

It's possible that 修羅場 refers literally to combat in this context, in which case one might say "Both of them have been through many battles/have seen many battles". Or "They're both battle-hardened veterans".
