Annotated Explanation: This is not my field of expertise, but in the reading that I did upon seeing your question, I found that the verb "annotate" was used more often than an expression such as "assign an annotation", and "annotations for a gene" rather than "annotations associated with a gene". That said, I propose the following for the sample passage that you provided: A procedure by which annotations for a candidate gene or candidate protein are collected from a data warehouse in which a gene or protein has multiple associated annotations that were obtained from the afore-mentioned information I am guessing that there was some previous mention of the research databases that are sources of annotation data.
