Japanese term or phrase: 梁型・柱型
I've been looking for the English counterpart for 梁型 or 柱型, which is a beam or a column, covered with surface finish the same as wall finish, protruding in the room of an apartment, such as condo. Mainly because of the space limitation, rooms cannot be laid out clear of any interference of beams or walls in Japanese apartments or condominiums.

Those protrusions look like the wall or ceiling because they are covered with the same finish. I saw many room layouts in foreign countries through Google image search but can't find the ones that apparently or clearly show any such protrusions inside the room.

Explanation:
Actually, we have the same thing in our condo. There's a beam that is in the corner of the living room that's painted to match the walls and ceiling (so it isn't too obtrusive and blends in with the rest of the interior)...It can't be removed because it's a structural beam.

From my understanding, "pilasters" are another thing altogether which are decorative "half" columns and are not necessarily of the same finish. Please see below:
