females flushed Explanation: I think you're conflating the different meanings of "raise" in English - this confusion doesn't exist in Italian, where "alzare" means raise in the sense of lift, and "allevare" means raise as in breed. Here, they're counting the number of birds the census takers and their dogs flush out of the undergrowth.
